I have a hen that gets vent gleet over and over again. In fact, she seems to perpetually get reinfected even though I put probiotics in their water regularly. Unfortunately, I got my hens when they were well grown pullets, and they have never been "tame," especially this Wyandotte who won't even come take food out of my hand as her flock mates will occasionally do. So it is impossible to catch her. I have to wait until dark and then snatch her out of the coop to clean her up.

Someone in another thread mentioned treating the vent gleet with an antifungal medicine. Where does one get such a thing? Does it require a trip to a vet?

I don't know why this one hen gets gleet every year. Do some hens just have a greater propensity for gleet? I always know which eggs come from her because they usually have poop stuck to them. If this keeps up, I may consider culling her from the flock to make room for a healthier layer. Advice?

I you should be able to get the medicine from a vet. I know you used to be able to get it online too but I don’t know anymore. Some people also treat it by applying a topical athletes foot medication to the vent but that seems like it could be difficult with how skittish she sounds.

you can get anti-fungal creams in the pharmacy eg Canesten cream. Epsom salt baths with lavender also helps. Once a hen gets vent gleet, they can be prone to it now and again. Vent gleet doesn't mean she's unhealthy and there is no reason to cull her. Humans get it all the time too
