Vent height

Yea I figured I would have one on each side so that I could perhaps have one open at night in the winter and have some ventilation. Then in the summer I could have both open for the full summer breeze. The "windows" should be draft free when they are closed. I have half of the frame covering the edge of the window front.

Thanks Sunny! I sure hope it comes out well. I have never really built anything before from scratch and so far things aren't totally square but there are a lot of screws in it so it should hold lol.

The roof should be interesting. I have one idea that I'm going to try but still not sure what material will be implemented. On a lighter note I can see why there are so many people on Craigslist that make coops. It has been a ton of fun building this one. Tomorrow I have off so far so I should be able to get down on it all day!

Boy I better get around to finishing my coop! It's perfectly functional but we've yet to finish up the cosmetic stuff. Our neighbors have been very patient since they have a much better view of it than we do.

Haha yea so yea I hear ya on the neighbor thing there. I left my crazy DW in the paint section at osh and she ended up with an oops gallon of some sort of a purple base with a pretty cool dark blue trim color. I'm really hoping my neighbors don't mind staring out of the back of their house and seeing this thing. IMO I like it, but I'm crazy just like my kind DW. It's not at all your average coop color but we live on an old semi-retired dairy farm and everything is very old and brown lol. It sticks out two feet above the existing fence that faces the distant road as well.

My coop is a working progress...the girls moved in at 6 weeks. At 8 weeks they got a plywood box to sleep in when previously there had only been a roost. At 11 weeks we installed the coop door, and we are just starting to think about the nest boxes now... at 13 weeks

Hehe ours are 17 weeks as of last Sat. and I am just now gettin my act together!

I keep checking the back of the rabbit hutch for an egg every morning assuming they are goin to beat me to it.

I swear I really should break out the new floodlamp I just bought and work past the sunset one of these days... xD Been building this for quite a while now. It took me forever to gather up the free wood and get a plan together etc. Not to mention I work fairly slow when I'm not being paid...

I decided to scrap the whole gable vent thing after all. I realized after figuring out how I'm going to do the roof there will be a gap between the roof and the walls on the front and back so that should provide more ventilation then I had planned with the vents. I love it when a plan comes together... Ahh I miss that show... lol. I should be pretty close to having them pooping erm, I mean sleeping in there by the end of tomorrow. I have still failed to decide on a roost design that I can agree on. You should see me at a restaurant with a menu...

Poor DW doesn't even add her input anymore, just hopes I don't torch the thing before it's done...

Thank you very much! That short wall with the door hole cut in it is the second try at those walls. The first set were 3 inches too short for some unknown reason. I swear I really do practice measure twice, cut once! Then when I went to put up the second set I realized the whole coop is not very square at all, and then the door hole cut was rediculously crooked for kickers so a piece had to be cut and nailed in just make it look a bit straight. Afterall I'm using the edge to some osb as my straight edge lol... I'm learning trim is about to become my best friend.

I would put it up high. It can be blocked in the event of really cold weather and maybe should be blocked nearest roost in wintertime. It is quite temperate and nice around Bay area from what I remember. A north wind in summertime. Sounds heavenly. Since chooks so close to roof, insulation of roof decking inside coop might be good for hot weather to cut down on radiated heat from roof in warmer weather. A vent to be opened in summertime near bottom good too, maybe two. Some ventilation needed year round no matter temps. Humidity is a real bad thing for chooks.
