Hi! I'm from India and quite inexperienced in raising chickens. About a year ago I was given a flock of 8 chicken. After 6 months I decided to get a bit more serious about it so bought 1 day old chicks (a breed by the name of Kadaknath. These are native to a particilar region in india.
These chicks are now about 5 months old. So far I haven't had any issues. But today I found one bird dead and another sick looking and neck tucked in and withdrawn. On inspection I found that the dead bird had a gaping hole at the vent. The other sick one also has a similar gaping hole at the vent and is bleeding. I don't see any maggots. But it seems as though they're being eaten from the inside. I've attached a photo of the vent. Pretty bad looking. Is there anybody who could help with advice? I will be visiting the vet first thing tomorrow.

Welcome :frow Sorry you lost a hen and have same issue with another... Have you noticed other chickens pecking? I would start with separating the sick hen, gently flush her vent with lukewarm water... Does she have a lot of white discharge? Vent gleet? Is she eating? Poop? Also try to post in ‘Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries’ forum.
@Wyorp Rock or @Eggcessive or @casportpony can chime in

Give her a warm bath immediately! Your suspicions could be right, something is definitely wrong with her backside, normal vents don't look like that!! Look for maggots, you'll drown them with water and kill them with salt with the salt bath.

Hi @kadaknath :frow Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry to hear about your loss.

Can you give more information?
How many birds do you have and how much space do they have?

I agree, it looks like vent picking.
You can try treating the injured one to see if it helps, sometimes the vent is too damaged and the bird is not able to recover.
Clean the vent and apply an antibiotic ointment.

If you need some tips on feed, poultry vitamins or products to use @Saaniya may be able to help you.
