Hi! I'm from India and quite inexperienced in raising chickens. About a year ago I was given a flock of 8 chicken. After 6 months I decided to get a bit more serious about it so bought 1 day old chicks (a breed by the name of Kadaknath. These are native to a particilar region in india.
These chicks are now about 5 months old. So far I haven't had any issues. But today I found one bird dead and another sick looking and neck tucked in and withdrawn. On inspection I found that the dead bird had a gaping hole at the vent. The other sick one also has a similar gaping hole at the vent and is bleeding. I don't see any maggots. But it seems as though they're being eaten from the inside. I've attached a photo of the vent. Pretty bad looking. Is there anybody who could help with advice? I will be visiting the vet first thing tomorrow.

Sorry you lost a hen and have same issue with another... Have you noticed other chickens pecking? I would start with separating the sick hen, gently flush her vent with lukewarm water... Does she have a lot of white discharge? Vent gleet? Is she eating? Poop? Also try to post in ‘Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries’ forum.
We are glad you joined this flock!
to have you here with us. Enjoy your time here at BYC!
