I have a chicken without prolapse, who is getting pecked in the vent. So far, it's not too bad, but I want to be prepared for the worst. I put hemeroid cream on it to help with the irritation (and I hope that the one hen that is pecking her won't like the taste.)_ I have bluekoat, but I'm afraid to spray it on her vent. Is it safe and will it help? (It might sound silly, but I'm afraid she won't be able to lay or defecate if I spray her with it.)
I increased protein to the flock and am letting them supervised free range for a few hours a day, but I can't do more time than that.
They have lots of access to food and water. If I have to isolate her, where do I do this? I don't have a second coop and run and my husband will have a stroke if I buy a second set. It's been recommended to me that I buy a rabbit cage and put it in the run where she can keep her status. I've also heard of people putting chickens into an extra dog crate and moving them into a spare room. Surprisingly, my husband has OK'd this, if it will help. The rabbit cage is cheaper, but its very hot out here and while I can make sure the cage gets a prime location and she gets pampered, I feel unsure about this. I'm also concerned about moving her from the 90 degree desert to the 70 degree house and back. I want her to experience as little stress as possible no matter what I choose.
What do you all do? If she's still getting bullied tomorrow I'm going to handle this. She's my best layer and a sweet little hen.
