Hello,

Hope everyone is home safe and spending quality time with their flock :)
Our easter egger bantam (about 2 years old) has a protracted vent.
We cleaned her up and gently pushed it back in twice now.
The first time it stayed in place for a few days, today as soon as we let her go, she pooped and out it came...

One of the other chicks occasionally thinks she is a rooster and humps her which is why we think this happened in the first place.
What are our options to fix this situation and help our easter egger get back to her old self?

Thank you very much!

It helps to separate in a dog crate with food and water. Has she been laying eggs? If she is laying, you could get her to stop laying temporarily by keeping her in the dark for 16 hours per day, only allowing her in the light for 8 hours a day to walk around, eat and drink. Keep a lubricant on the prolapse tissue when it pops out to keep the tissue from dring out. Vets are expensive, but they can also put in a temporary stitch in her vent to keep it in for a week or two, while she heals. Here is some information on prolapses:

Most of this I got off the internet, other from experience

Definitely check on it at least every day, I would personally check morning, lunch, and night.
Make sure it doesn't get infected. I would get some antibacterial cream or something, and apply it in the morning before she starts laying.

If she becomes egg bound, she will most likely die. If you don't treat an egg-bound chicken soon enough it will die within 48 hours or less. (Skip if she's not egg-bound, just in case she is I wouldn't want to make the hunt for information any harder than necessary). This is a really good page that is very helpful and clear. https://www.thehappychickencoop.com/egg-bound-chicken/

Some symptoms of an egg-bound chicken are:

*Waddling
*Tail Pumping (trying to expel the egg)
*Secluded from others
*Looks sick or in pain

If it is egg-bound, they are very painful, and thus the hen should be handled with great caution.

Clean the tissue before you pop it back in, just to avoid infections

Anti-inflammatory cream or medication can help keep it in

Adding calcium to its diet help the uterus to contract properly again

Hope your hen returns to full health!

She hasn't layed eggs in a couple weeks but apart from that seems happy and doesn't show any other signs.
Is there a specific anti-inflamatory cream you would recommend?
Thank you for the article, it does have a lot of great information.

I don't think it even needs to be a cream. A lot of people just use aspirin, but only aspirin. It seems really hard to find a good cream, especially for chicken use. But I would recommend aspirin or meloxicam.

Dosage for aspirin- 25 mg for each pound each day
You can just dissolve it in the chicken's water. Separate it from the other chickens if you have them.

Dosage for meloxicam- 0.075 mg for each pound.
You can round and it should be ok, as long as you're not rounding 0.5 all the way to 1. But like if it comes out to .45 you can round to 0.5 and it'll be fine. It also should dissolve in water. This should be given twice a day

Another option is just shove it down and massage the throat to make sure she doesn't spit it up. A little less benevolent but it works, and it's a sure way to make sure she gets the medication.

Did you read the Chicken Chick article I posted about prolapses? It doesn’t matter what type of lubricant that you use on the prolapse, but just keep it moist so that it doesn’t dry out. Some use hydrocortisone cream, and honey or a 1:1 mixture of sugar and water are fine to help reduce swelling. Oils, suchas coconut, olive, mineral, and vaseline are fine as well.
