ventilation issue, please help? New pics on #15 Thank you!

I too would vote for greater ventillation. I'm in the western mountains of VA and even though we don't usually have too much heat, ventillation has been an issue with my flock - during the summer but perhaps more so during the winter. And it is easier to have it and have to cover it than to not have it - I am trying to figure out where to cut some more holes in my coop to increase ventillation.

Pat - It's nice to see someone on here who has been in or around the Blacksburg area - I work at VT and live in a neighboring county.

More ventilation is better, so that the birds don't become ill. Someone here has a wonderful post about it on their page. Maybe doing a search can find it?

Thank you for all the help and compliments! I loved the ventilation page and suggestions - the moisture is the best argument. We are going with four windows open! Our friend helping us argued that the size of the windows meant that 2 would be enough, but your suggestions and arguments helped me make the case! Thanks a lot - will post pics of newly installed windows when we are finished.

Bubble wrap for the windows? We rarely get below freezing here, but I see your point about condensation.

By the way, the last link on LeafZoo's post didn't work, and I couldn't find it with a general search.

I just wanted to say a little something about condensation. You would be amazed at the amount of moisture that chickens put off when they breathe. Glad you decided on 4 opening. We have vents along the bottom, sofets along the overhang and 3 opening windows....we still get some moisture in the really cold winter months. It never hurts to have to many that could be opened if necessary.

Great looking coop.

Get him to hinge as many as possible for heat as well as moisture and ammonia fumes ventilation in the winter, also think about using a wire with smaller openings. A coon will reach right thru 1x1 wire, grab a chicken and pull it out piece by piece.

Ventilation is an issue in my geographic area. Chickens do make heat and moisture. I wish you well on your design! Good Job!
