I've been a juvenile diabetic since I was four. I've been on the pump for about three years now and I love it, but sometimes I have trouble with my catheter changes and it forces me to change catheters three or four times followed by like a bajillion finger sticks. You get used to the needles, but the pain never really goes away. I have very vascular skin and today I hit a couple of really bad spots trying to put the needle of the catheter in and it really hurt and started really bleeding. Now my whole abdomen feels like I've been sticking really painful needles in it all night long...which is pretty much what I've been doing.

I'm glad I don't have to take regular insulin shots anymore, but I'm still on three shots a day plus the catheter changes every three days or so. The finger pricks aren't so bad any more, thank goodness. I usually don't talk about it with my friends because they just don't get it, but tonight I felt I needed to vent to my BYC friends.

I'm crossing my fingers now hoping this catheter works so I don't have to change it again!

I had to give myself shots, and they'd hurt like hell and leave some nasty bruises. I didn't wear shorts for a couple years because my thighs always looked so black and blue.

I used to have a couple of very terrible endocrinologists who used to swear that subcutaneous shots would not make you bleed. I almost always bleed, so it really annoyed me that they would say that! Having vascular skin sure can be a pain when you need to give shots, but I'm lucky because it helps me heal SUPER fast. I guess it's both a gift AND a curse

Thanks to everyone. Feels better to vent about it!

Thanks for all the hugs, ya'll! I finally found "the spot" last night and all is well today. I actually met a girl last year who also has juvenile diabetes and I talked to her last night. It's so amazing to have someone to talk to who knows exactly what it is you are going through. It's rare that I find people who are also juvie diabetics!
