Vertical (gravity) vs. horizontal (spring loaded) watering nipples

I just got some of these installed. Quick question for you all.

Mine look like they have a little pool of water sitting in the bottom of each of them. That's fine for right now. But I was hoping to use these in the winter with a heater in the bucket. If there is water sitting in there those springs will freeze down and they won't be able to get water.

Do you have water sitting in yours?

Anyone use in winter in below "0" and single digits? How did they do for you?

I've had no problem with mine down to 18 below even in a small container sitting on top of a seedling heat mat in my coop for my polish.

Leahsmom did you have your chooks drink out of them yet? They usually slurp the water out of the little depression.

We're working on it! I'll have to observe over the next few days.

I gave some to the little kiddos too (7 wks) and they went right over and figured them out. On the other side of the divider I've only seen on girl drink from them so far.

My 1 week olds picked it up in a couple hours.......my older 6-7 week olds took a couple days.
They'll learn faster if you give them no other source of water...but it can be frustrating to watch...lol.

Yes, and it's worse when it's hot out. In the extreme heat I put out flat pans of water for them to stand in to cool off. Of course they drink from them too but they were used to going to the waterer even though there were pans out.

Unless it cools down some I'll have to leave the pans. But I did put them farther away from where the food and bucket is with the HNs.

@aart I was able to screw the HNs into the same holes as I had used for the other waterers I pmd you. So it has now become my experimental HN bucket.

Hard to train to new waterer if it's hot out that's for sure....it'll just take longer maybe, but if one of them gets it the rest will follow.

Good deal on using the same holes! I figured they would fit OK.
