Very bad Prolapse... is it too late??? GRAPHIC PIC

Well... Gaby's prolapse was back out this morning

Tried to put it back in this morning and this afternoon it was back out. I guess only time will tell if we'll be able to help her. I was so hopeful after last night's bath/sugar treatment. We'll be doing another soaking and sugar treatment tonight.

most important is not to let it dry out, so if you haven't tried Prep H at least that would keep it lubed up. Hope it stays in next time you try.

Hello, I am new to this website and have 4 chickens of my own with 2 more on the way...

My leghorn, Betty White, is just one year old this month and has a crusted-over prolapse; just like what I've just read. Do the warm baths really work? And just WHAT is the crust from? Is it a scab or has fecal matter crusted over the prolapsus? I'm not really sure, but would like to know what exactly I am dealing with here.

On another not so serious note:
My little bantam, Chickie Roo has gone broody....I have blocked all access to the nesting house and she is up and walking around and eating today...how long until she resumes laying?

Between her and Betty, we used to gather a dozen eggs a week. Now we are down to zero! Help Please!

Hello cockadoodlefarm....

The warm baths did work for us. From my experience, the crust on my girls' prolapse was from a scab. The warm water helped soften it and keep it clean from any dried poop. Also make sure to use some PrepH and push the prolapse back in. My girls' took about 3-4 days of warm baths/prepH/pushing it back in twice a day for it to actually stay. The swelling needed to go down and the scab fell off before it stayed in. But like someone else said, it's important to not let the prolapse dry out. You can also make a sugar/water solution on her vent. Other than that, make sure she's away from your other chickens, in a dark, warm place... either a garage, spare bedroom or basement with a heat lamp. (you don't want her to try to lay eggs during this time) And, of course, food and clean water. Good luck and keep us posted!!!! All this great advice worked for my girl and she's back to laying :) And I thought for sure she wouldn't make it.

To answer your question about the broody.... I've read you can put them in a wire bottom cage/crate/hutch for a couple days to break their broodiness. I have 2 stubborn girls right now and I've tried to let them work things out on their own, but I think I'm gonna have to resort to the cage :-/ I wish I could give them some eggs.... they seem SO dedicated to sitting.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thank you so much for responding! I gave her a sugar/water bath and the prep. H yesterday and the prolapse is significantly smaller today. w00-hoo! As for my broody girl, she is restricted from her nesting house and has been scratching and acting more herself yesterday and today...Praying for some eggs soon! Will def. keep everyone posted!
