Very green diarrhea - pic's included

fingers crossed for the hen.
poor little girl..sounds like she is having a hard time.
I hope she'll be ok.

what did the vet use for to treat the yeast infection?
(just curious..LOL)

you could use sand in the run..clean sand...nothing that has impurities in it.
sand will help dry up the mud.
kid's play sand is good if you can get it..but other clean sand will do if you have a large run.

if straw (or hay)gets wet..it can go moldy and that's not a good thing..

Cheryl-chicken is getting Fluconazole for the yeast and Sulfatrim for the bacteria. It's still a guessing game for the vet because he's just not sure what's going on with her. I was disappointed today at how little she ate, and she drank nothing. I put her outside supervised by herself for a little while and I got nervous because she started going for the grass again. I brought her back in and when I put her in her hospital she started flipping out. She got a little taste of being outside again. So I made the decision to put her back with the other girls. There is no hay in their run anymore for her to eat. She snapped at every one of them but finally settled down again. She also ate and drank like normal. I stayed out with them to make sure there were no battles for roost spots since she's back in the mix, but everyone settled down quietly.

Two other things I'd love some help with.
1. On her leg - first I thought it was a vein sticking out but now I think it's a bruise but I'm not sure. Does anyone know? None of my other girls have this and Cheryl didn't have it until recently.
2. She seems to be stepping really high and exaggeratedly with her feet. She almost seems to stretch them out in front of her before taking a step.

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi Jill - It's great that she began to eat and drink again once back with her feathered "friends?" Hoping she will do more of that tomorrow when perhaps the stress of being at the vet wears off a bit more and/or the meds kick in a bit more?

The leg - all I can think of is a bruise.....And the stepping high - maybe because it hurts? Though that does not seem to explain the weird stretching. Maybe she got cramped up in a cage at the vets and is stiff and working it out a bit? Not sure - haven't run across anything like this before. Hopefully tomorrow she will be more herself.

They keep us thinking, don't they?

Hi JJ.

She's doing ok. Thanks so much for asking. She's still not quite right though. I've stopped all medicine for now to let her system get back in order on its own. She's eating and drinking normal again and her crop seems to be behaving. The poos go up and down - some good some runny but not quite normal yet. The vet said to watch her for a little while and then if things don't straighten out I'll take a sample to him to send out for a bacteria culture. She may need a different antibiotic. The bloodwork showed a few levels elevated but he said they were consistent with an infection and nothing was alarmingly high. She doesn't seem to be doing the weird-stepping thing as much. I guess it is just a bruise on her leg but it's still there.

You were so right when you said they keep us guessing - they sure do. I've only been at this for a year and I'm exhausted mentally after having so many problems. And it's not just the chickens. My dogs have been battling a protozoa for the third time. They love to eat bunny poops (little Milk Duds). And one of them was diagnosed a second time with Lyme disease and had knee surgery a few months ago. So, I'm hoping for a better year healthwise. I hope you and BJ and Annie are all ok and that you had a nice holiday.

Jill, have you tried giving her some probiotic?

it's a good idea after such an ordeal, and after getting antibiotics that interfere with the normal "gut flora".

fingers crossed for your hen.

look under her wings...do you see any of that discoloration there? (or anywhere else?)

I understand - the worry and the detective work can be so draining.

Sending lots of good wishes for a peaceful and healthy 2008 for all in your good care.

Hopefully probiotics will help the hen get her system back in order and I hope the dogs are done having troubles soon! Bunny poops - yeesh. Glad to be a human that prefers pizza and chocolate!
Years ago when I lived in Rhode Island and had a dog his favorite thing to do was go down the street to a bay where he wallowed in low tide, and would come back full of smelly disgusting festering rotting material, have eaten it and dressed fully in it, happy as a lark, his buff color turned green/black and slimy to the nth degree.

I can without a shadow of a doubt that the green mark on her leg is a bruise.
I was reading someplace that meat birds who get stressing on "that day" try to fly and then they bruise themselves and their meat can be green in spots.
Glad that she's feeling a little better.
