Very ill RIR hen with extreme weight loss **Update - Salpingitis Confirmed**

Thank you so much for the info Kathy. I am going to call the vet and see if they will give me some baytril and metronidazole. I have API General Cure as a form of metronidazole, but I've got no clue on how to dose that. I just know it goes in the water. Math is not my strong point. So i will see if I can get both from the vet. I know the vet has liquid and pill form of metronidazole. Also, I am doing their second dose of safegaurd today.

Thanks for all the replies. I will update on how Ruby 3 is doing. :)

One can get Baytril without a prescription here:

Worth reading:
https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/medicine-chart/baytril-for-birds

The metronidazole dose I've been using lately is 50mg/kg twice a day for no less than five days.
The Baytril dose I have been using lately is 20mg/kg for no more than five days.

If you know the weigh of you bird in pounds the math is easy.

Metronidazole:
Weight of bird in pounds, divide by 2.2 times 50 (mg per kg) = the number of mg needed. Example for five pound hen:
  • 5 ÷ 2.2 x 50 = ~114 mg twice a day, so half a pack of the API will work.

10% Baytril liquid
Metronidazole:
Weight of bird in pounds, divide by 2.2 times 20 (mg per kg), divide by 100 (mg per ml) = the number of mg needed. Example for five pound hen:
  • 5 ÷ 2.2 x 20 ÷ 100 = 0.45ml. You could give this amount once a day or give 1/2 the amount twice a day.

Best thing to do would be to use both medications under the direction and supervision of a vet, but for those that don't have that option, the above is how I use both drugs, and both *can* be used together.

Let me know if that doesn't make sense.

Awesome info, Kathy! Thanks! I just got back from the vet. (Had no luck over the weekend.) I picked up the metronidazole 250mg tabs and baytril 10% liquid. I am following your dosage. They didn't have any advice on dosage, just gave me what I needed. I weighted her while I was there. 5.25#. So I've figured the dosage, thanks to your easy to understand instructions. :)

My question is, how do I give her the metronidazole tablets? I basically need to give her 1/2 pill twice a day. But how do you give a chicken a pill?

Thanks,
Alysha
