Very Important Question:

How about chickens and a bunny?

I contemplated the same question when I decided to get chickens. I was thinking about getting chickens and ducks. After some researching (thru this great site) I discovered ducks and their mess. Lots of mess, everywhere. I only have 3/4 of an acre and I had a feeling that it would get messy quickly. Your lot is not very large, so I think the mess could be overwhelming. But, I could be wrong since I've never had ducks!

And, I'm saving the ducks as my "treat" when we move (hopefully in the next 3-5yrs) My dh wants goats, I want ducks

I would love to tell you to get ducks, so I could unload on you my danged cayugas, but... I'll be nice...
Get chickens... trust me

Check city codes first, ours caps chickens at 4 hens (no roos), I'm writing a reasearch paper and pulled city codes back up, the 4 hen limit is for "crowing fowl", specifically guineas, chickens, and peafowl. In other words i could have as many ducks as I can clean up after....

Guess what mama wants for Christmas?

With the size of your yard, I say chickens! Ducks and geese are messy.. And their 'squat' it VERY wet and it seems like there is soooo much more of it!

Chickens...... I only have one duck, she makes more mess than all the chickens put together, and I always seem to slip in it!.....yep chickens are a must........enjoy.

i say chickens ive never had a duck so you shouldnt either lol kidding i just know ducks are messy and chickens are a bit but not as much or get both good luck with your decision

Thanks y'all!

Our local ordinances don't seem to address chickens beyond limitations on production/processing poultry.

The "Keep Chickens!" book that started this madness (random pick-up at the bookstore while waiting for the restroom) mentions that New Orleans has a 3-5 hen limit (book isn't in front of me) with permission from all neighbors within 300' (only homeowner in that radius says A-OK).

I've not yet spoken to either of the local community gardens that keep chickens, to see if they've got better info than I re local zoning ordinances.

All the info y'all wrote above is great... I hadn't considered that ducks would be messier than chickens! I figured the coop and feed requirements would be different, and that I'd need a "water feature".

Definitely going with chickens, then.

Thanks again!
