I did an awful thing...I sent my husband to the feed store!

I gave these instructions....grab a 5 or 10 lb bag of chick starter for the girls.

He brings back a 10 lb bag that has chick starter written all over it and I opened it, poured it into their large food container and noticed the crumbles were really big. I put it in their feeder last night and by noon today, they had hardly eaten anything. I saw the girls and heard them at the feeder as usual but no food was really missing.

So, I fixed it! I took the crumbles, some rolled oats and a tiny bit of flax seeds and mixed it. I then ground the entire 10 lbs of starter, flax and oats in the coffee grinder on course grind.

I gave it to the girls and they went NUTS. They ate like they had not eating on a week then promptly stretched out and went to sleep.

I called the feed store and the owner told me she had the 'kids' weigh and bag the starter and never saw it. I have a feeling my girls are eating a food that is a step up. So off tomorrow I go to the co-op for starter.

Has anyone else had a bag of starter that had large/larger crumbles in it? I was so ticked because I do not think my girls ate any of it becuase they couldn't which means my babies were hungry for about 13 hours...except for their cooked oatmeal and their egg.

I only buy starter crumbles because I think mash is wasteful and too much of a powder. Even the little silkie babies manage to eat the crumbles no problem. The crumbles I get are about the size of rice grains and larger, up to split pea sized.

I get my chick food from Del's Feed and Farm Supply. Their crumbles are bigger and my chicks seem just fine with it. I like the bigger crumbles because theres so much less waste. The Purina stuff I was getting was 40% powder. No joke.
