I'm feeding everyone flock raiser after my smallish bag of chick starter finished. I agree about the lazy factor--I think that's why the bigs don't fly over the plywood. Too much work and also not enough clearance. The little sure do!
When I let the bigs out, they rush out to their feeders outside the run (I haul them in at night) and I sprinkle a cup of scratch/BOSS all over. That distracts them enough that I can bring out the littles without trouble, at least so far.
The interesting part for me is now that they're getting bolder and staying out in the evening as the bigs are going to roost. A couple of them are getting quite bold, but when they do get a peck, the hen doesn't seem to be really committed to getting them and they're pretty zippy. So far, so good. Here's hoping it lasts and that my contractor doesn't flake.
