So my Golden Commets are 3 weeks old, any they are begging to get out. So I have a small "play pen" in the backyard for them to run around in. Anyways, I had they out in it today while I was inside watching TV. Every once and a while I would turn around to make shure they were ok. Thats where it started to go bad. I had one of those feelings and I happened to look in the yard. There was a big white cat trying to get in the cage. I happened to have my paintball gun laying around beacuse I had to clean out my stuff, so I grabed it and ran outback and shot in the air to scare it. It took off. I figured id get them back in the garage, so I went into the hallway to get my shoes on. I started out the back door and I noticed that cat was back only It had one of my chicks in its mouth! I pulled up and shot the cat three times with the paintball gun. It droped my chick and took off, spining and biteing at its back. It ran to the pen and the chick ran up to me. It was only only chick that
I think is a roo. The chick had some feathers missing from its neck and had 2 small cuts on it neck. I put all the chicks back, and I Put some pine tar on Joey.

Thats joey. Not that much brown, It just showed up more in the pic I guess

Anyways, at this point I am very mad. I knew whos cat it was and I called them up. No one was home so I left a message. I said: "Hello, Today around 6 o'clock one of your cats broke into my chicken pen and caught one of my chicks and almost killed it. Can you please give me a call, and keep your animals under control".

About an hour later there was a knock on my door. The lady was there, holding her cat that had 3 orange splatters on its back and butt.

. She started yelling and me saying that I had no right to harm her cat, and that she was going to be calling the police and have me arrested for animal abuse. I told her that It was her fult her cat got shot by my paintball gun. I expalined what happened and told her I was defending my chickens. She said she was going home to go to the vet for her cat, and then she said "dont get mad if my cats happen to kill all of your little germ ridden chickens". I informed her that if her cats attack my chickens again, that they were not going to be shot with a paintball gun, but with my rifle. She flipped out and I shut the door and went back to joey.

So did I do the right thing? I felt like I had the right to defend my chickens.

Anyones thoughts?

Thanks
~Bryan

Heck yeah! You've got every right to defend your livestock/property. No question! As far as I'm concerned you went above and beyond by calling her. It really and truly amazes me how people refuse to take responsibility for either themselves or their pets. Boggles the mind! Kudos to you!

She best be glad the cat was not in my yard it would not have been the first cat I have shot for killing chicks I don't understand peoples logic. I would be curious to know what reaction she would have had if someone's dog had gone in her yard and attacked her precious cat. People make no sense to me.

if you have to shoot it I think it's best to SSS, shoot, shovel and shhhh. that way they may suspect it but can't prove it.......and you can't be held liable, I know plenty of people that think my chickens don't mean anything but dogs and cats do, my town police included. I called about a dog going after my chickens on my property and they only cared about the dog, not that it was trying to eat my chickens

. Next time we will SSS, dont' have to deal with anyone then.....

It makes me so mad when people dont keep their animals under control. It makes me even madder when they do not take resposibilty(sp) for what their animals do. I just convinced my mom that it is ok for me to protect my livestock. Now i keep a 12 gauge in the basement by the door and a .45 in my room so if something does try to get them i will be ready.

You did the right thing. If it had been me the cat would not be alive.

i would make sure you have an antibotic cream or water additive because cats have a very dirty mouth .. i use to work at a vets office & have seen cats come in that have been fighting with huge absesses on them .. just a lil info i thought i would share with you. hope joey is gonna be ok & as for her well poop on her you gave her more explaination than most would ever consider !!!

Trouble here there is no leash law for cats. It would be SSS, never know trouble you can get into.

In my town some teenage boys got in big trouble shooting a skunk with a paint ball gun.
