Nice to read this post, I was wondering if I was the only one that doesn't immediately try to kill any predator that comes on the property....
We have a neighbor with a very annoying dog that has chased my chickens, and yes- has killed one. I have chased the dog, thrown things at it, and have had several civil discussions with the neighbor. Neighbor has fixed fences, has electrified fences ect. I have taken the dog to the pound, they have paid fines ect. They have paid for the deceased chicken. We are still civil, and really should be as we live right next door. Is is SO much nicer to be on good terms with neighbors, as we can look out for each other.
Cat lady is probably a lonely lady who loves her cats and does not understand that someone can care about a chicken. She can be reasoned with, if not by you as you shot her cat and she is mad, but by animal control. If you must make a point to her by making her cat disappear, than take the effort to capture it, and take it to the pound, then tell her where her cat is. She can pay a fine and retrieve it if she wants to. This is both a better way ethically, and is less likely to result in bad feelings from other neighbors. Even if you don't give a hoot about what she thinks, there is nothing to be gained by having many neighbors think of you as the cat killer. Most states do protect property owners killing stray animals harassing livestock, but if you don't have to kill, why do it?
Make your pens predator safe. Predators include cats, dogs, raccoons, coyotes ect. You are their caretaker and you need to protect them. Though it is more work than just shoot and bury, protecting them with fencing will work when you are not there or sleeping. If your neighbor's cat can get the chicks, than a raccoon certainly can.
I love the idea of a big rooster on patrol. My cats are repelled by my rooster as well as broody hens. They would take a chick probably, but want nothing to do with the adult birds.
Fencing your property well, will also keep out most predators including the average cat.
