I hope your chick is healing up and not too traumatised.

It must be a very different life over here where I live. I'd never dream of harming a cat, even though it was on my property. That's just what cats do. Instead I'd make sure the inside of my chicken coop wasn't accessible at all to the cat. Cats cant dig, they are not heavy or strong enough to lift, so I shouldn't think it would be too hard. Maybe just something weighty on the roof of your coop?

I doubt the cat has a personal vendetta against you and your chicks, it's just nature. Maybe you could spray it with water when you saw it in the garden (Although if it returned after being blasted with a paint ball gun, maybe it's un-deturrable;))

Again, it's obvious there is a big cultral differance between us. For harming a cat over here you would be in big trouble with the law.

There IS a big difference. "Land of the Free", and all that. Over here, in most cases it is legal to kill any animal that is endangering your livestock.

HOWEVER, I personally believe that there are usually good alternatives to killing. Like paintballing, calling the owner, and trapping/taking to animal control if the owner doesn't pay attention. Also building secure coops and pens.

You were definately gracious to use a paintball gun and I very much doubt her cat needed a vet:rolleyes: Yes, SSS is the best and it is crazy that people have to keep every other animal under control in town but cats can run the town! Hope Joey makes it and hopefully that cat learned his lesson and won't come back!

I applaud your patience.. I would have shot the thing as soon as it start stalking my chickens.... and if that's the kind of attitude the owner have I'll probably skin it and wear it as a hat.

Check your laws, with cats you may not have the right to shoot them.

Saw 2 cases on court TV were 2 people lose their case, one shot a cat getting geese, another a dog after his goat.

Lot depend on your laws state and local.

If she loved her cat she ought to be thankful to you for not killing it, imo. The paint will come off, in the meantime it will alert others that she is a predator and to be wary.

Agree . Around here DNR does not want cats roaming. They are too hard on wildlife/song birds. Discression is the better part of valor. Take care of the problem and keep our mouth shut. For every cat lover, there are at least a dozen bird lovers that hate the cats.

I had someone buy chicks from me the other day and as we were loading them we noticed one had 3 punctures in a row as if the cat tried grabbing it through the fences. At first I didn't want to harm this cat 5 years ago when we moved in. He constantly hunted at our feeders and I scared him away daily. I talked to the owner, they don't change anything because they dont' want a litter box in the house

. All last year he stalked my chickens but I caught him in the act and scared him off. I have my chicks enclosed with 2 layers of fences so the one he grabbed must have been right against the side. I now shoot him with plastic bb's as I can't kill him. If dh catches him hunting my chickens again he said he is going to take care of him. The owner lives right next to my parents and yells at my autistic (3 yo, who is extremely nice to animals)son when he tries to pet him

I live in the woods.. We have stray cats galore here. But they never go after my chicks for some reason.. they go after my own cats. Sitting in the woods and howling all night or fight with them.

We have 4 cats on our own that all go outside except our old 3 legged one , she doesnt do much of anything anymore. Anyways, our cats are scared of the chickens. You would think as they are 3 huge males they would love to go after them but they dont. They make a big ole beeline around them.Yet they bring birds. moles, squirrels etc onto our doorstep allmost everyday .
We have alot of stray cats burried on our property because our own cats get torn up and injured alot by strays fighting for territory on our land. I just hope the Pet cemetary thing will never happen...we be SOOL then.. lol

Cats have their own laws.. there is no leash law for cats.. so be it.. they come onto my property and go after my animals.. they are dead. I love animals but I refuse to have people dump their animals onto my land and think its ok.Not to mention the vet bills I have to pay since they go after my cats.
My cats stay around the house. ( over an acre of land ) and i have no neighbors to speak of.

Sorry but if they are a nuisance they will die. I had a stray dog going after my horse and chased it out of the pasture thru a fence. The horse ran onto the four lane a mile away and got killed. I wont allow any animal that doesnt belong to me on my property.

Period!!

Edited for speeling errorz ..
