Hello, I'm excited about becoming a member on this site and I hope to learn as much as I can about raising duck and chickens!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
The first time we got chickens was a year ago, about the same time of the year. I am still extremely new and am now raising a fresh batch of chicks and have so many questions! On top of that, I'm trying out ducks this year, so I have so much more to learn.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
There are 10 hens, two roosters, 22 chicks, and five ducklings.
(3) What breeds do you have?
A very wide variety. Bantams, a couple Polish, Barred Rock, Orpington, etc. I actually can't quite remember what all the breeds are because there was a lot of confusion about what some of the chicks are to begin with. (A mixup with the breed labels.) As for the ducks, I have no idea. They could be anything.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love how each one has its own personality. They all have funny quirks about them and although they don't seem that attached to me, I love them dearly.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
In addition to being a chicken momma, I'm a goat momma and a plant momma!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I am the the second oldest of eight kids and live with my rather big family on a small farm in the south. We have dogs, cats, horses, cows, and the above mentioned animals, and are continuing to grow our little herds! We are very new to animal care and expanding our knowledge with each day, and I am the primary caretaker of the goats and chickens.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found the site only a few days ago as I was furiously tearing up the web in search of as much information on chick and duckling care as I could before we brought home our newest bunch. I kept noticing that the most helpful information I was finding was coming from this site so I took a closer look around and realized just how valuable it is! I decided to join as soon as I saw how active the site still is and how many members there are.
I'm itching to ask all my questions right now, but it is past 2 AM and I must get some sleep. *sigh*
