OMG I'm so sorry - I have so much on my mind that I forgot to update. Here goes:
The vet called late Monday night and said the results came back as viral and not bacterial as he first thought. Said the doxycycline that we've had them on wouldn't help. More testing to determine the exact virus would have cost a few hundred dollars and at that point the vet said no (which was fine with me).
So...what to do now? My options are keep trying to get them well and hope it runs its course. It seems to be; it's been a week today and all of them seem better except two, and I think they were the last two to get it. The rooster even got a full crow in this morning without stopping halfway to hack up a lung! I do know that even if they recover, they will be carriers for life so that means no new chickens in my coop as long as these are here. I will also have to practice strict biosecurity measures so I don't contaminate DBF's flock or the chicks that I hatch and sell. Since both of these are in other locations and nowhere near my coop, I think (I hope) that this will be possible to do.
Option #2 is to put them all down and start over. I have two big problems with this: one, I love these birds - they are wonderful, friendly chickens, and two - it would take me until next year to raise new breeding stock.
The vet said the virus would not transfer to the eggs so I should be ok hatching them.
Opinions welcome - thanks!
