Very Sick Chicken

I found one of my Deathlayer’s very sick one day. I brought her home and she seemed very depressed, wasn’t eating or drinking, and was starving. I have been giving her garlic and oatmeal by hand and she seems to have a little more energy, but she now has a case of diarrhea. I think she has worms but i am sure what it could be and how I should treat it. Any help will be much appreciated.

Has it been below freezing where a frostbitten comb might be possible? Or is her comb and face dark from a heart or circulation issue? Is there any drainage on her face, or is that just the picture? I would offer her water and electrolytes, Poultry NutriDrench, or even gatorade at room temperature would be good. Try feeding her chicken feed mixed with water and offer a bit of scrambled egg. Stop the oats. What do her poops look like? Have you ever seen worms in her poop? Has she started laying? How does her crop feel—empty and flat, or full, puffy, doughy, or hard? One thing that might be wrong is coccidiosis. Corid (amprollium) from the feed store can help treat that. Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer are good wormers.

It has been a weird weather swing from temperature going from 60 to 20 all of a sudden. I don’t think her face or comb is dark. I am not sure if she has drainage. She has not started laying yet, and her crop feels normal like squishy. And how should I give her the de-wormer doses?

If her crop feels squishy, and she hasn’t eaten or drunk, her crop may not be emptying overnight. Sometimes sick chickens may have a slow crop. Check it first thing in the morning before she eats or drinks. It should be flat and empty, or not felt. In the picture, her comb and face appear dark or cyanotic.

Valbazen dosage is 1/2 ml orally once and repeated in 10 days. If using SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer give 0.25 or 1/4 ml per pound orally for 5 straight days.
