Tough question to ask you all. How do you put a chicken down the most humanely?
My 5 y.o. Brahma hen, big Sis has been struggling since last fall.
I got her past a scaly mite infestation, but she never came back 100%. Now a month ago, she started to go downhill. Didn't want to scratch or free range with the other girls and just ducked under their favorite bush for the day. It appeared she was molting, tiny under feathers sprouting and no mites found. Then the heat hit 100+ continuous days (So California) and everyone suffered.
I've got them on electrolytes, frozen treats, cold watermelon and a pan of water with an ice pack.
She was pecking at the scratch and mealworms, but stopped eating over the weekend. She only gets food + water now when I feed her.
I've read so much advice here that helped me keep her going. But also I've read about not letting her suffer. She's very weak & making clucks of distress whenever she gets disturbed. Today she wouldn't come off the roost, so I carried her to the feeding area and she limped over and hid.
Please give me some advice on how to help her pass on if you have any.
