Hi All

I hope someone can shed some light on what's wrong with my chicken. She's about a year and a half old Polish hen. I noticed she was getting lethargic a few weeks back when I had another Polish from the same flock that was very ill and we eventually had to cull her. We had a bout of lice, which I treated. The only similar symptoms between the two hens is the lethargy and pale combs.
This one that I'm still trying to treat developed a limp in her right leg last week, no signs of obvious pain or break but it seems like its in an upper joint. Her tail feathers are scraggy (but I think they might be going through a moult as others have this and still seem fine). Yesterday I noticed the feathers on the right side of her face are thinning and her right eye was gummed shut with a thick cloudy discharge, also a discharge in her nostrils and she's started to do the gasping thing, which worries me hugely. A couple of weeks ago I put a drop of ivomec pour on under her wings and on the back of her neck but that doesn't seem to have done anything.

Last week i treated them all with corid thinking it might have been coccidiosis and she really seemed to perk up but now has declined further after coming off corid so i started it again for her yesterday with some electrolytes in the water too. I have some tetroxy HCA I could treat with?

Might be worth mentioning that another of my hatchlings who's now 4 months started putting her head down to scratch her chest ad then started running backwards and would get stuck and fall over. Not sure if they're related symptoms or not. This hen is in a separate cage with electrolytes in her water too.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Thanks

I have no experience with this, but someone on here might. Keep checking your post & search the site for similar symptoms. Maybe someone has had this happen before. I'm sorry your girls are having troubles & hope you find out what it is soon so that you can treat & hopefully cure them.

Ok, try going to this topic & see if the info matches your symptoms.

"Coryza? What Am I In For? 1st Illness Ever In My Chickens"

That might give you a place to start. I searched "goopy eyes, nasal discharge" & just clicked on the thread.

I know you're worried, and you'll do whatever you can to help them not be sick or in pain or suffer. If you need medications, try a Tractor Supply, or an Agway if you have either one of those. Most feed and farm supply stores will (hopefully) carry medications if you need something & don't have it.

I hope you find the information that you need & that everything works out.

Yes, I would start treating with the tetroxy ! If its mycoplasma tetracycline is one of the antibiotics used to combat this. When you treated with corrid, did you treat for the full 5- 7 days?

I gave it to them for a full 5 days, 2 days off then when I noticed a decline they went back on it yesterday. Would you cycle off that and start the tetroxy?

Ok thank you! I syringed some of the water with tetroxy into her as she wasn't drinking so hopefully that will perk her up. I will keep you posted. Sadly, we came home to find another of my polish walking with the same limp. Has anyone ever seen this as a symptom with nasal discharge and weepy eyes? When I syringed the really bad hen, her eyes were weeping a bubbly watery liquid....?

The bubbles in the eye are certainly signs of mycoplasma , but the limp is very concerning. Keep the antibiotics up to them and hopefully someone who has seen these symptoms together will chime in.

Mycoplasma species can also cause tendonitis and bursitis, either of which can result in a limp. Salmonella is possible but not as good a fit with the symptoms.
