I have a Rhode Island Red roster. I do not know his age. I do not know his weight. He was a rooster that has lived in my neighborhood for a few years on his own. When I brought my hens home he just appeared. I let him hang around for a few mnths while I fed him and gave him fresh water daily. I decided to try and put him inside my coop with my 6 hens. He LOVED it. Well he has been in there for about 2 wks. I noticed 2 days ago he was acting a lil strange. (He is friendly and has eaten out of my hands.) He started to shake his head side ti side a lot more. He started to sneeze as well. Now it seems as if he is not eating and he can't crow. It sounds like he has a sore throat from crowing so much. He also has a cough. I had another rooster that was about 7mnths old and within 2 wks of having in the coop with the hens he had all of the same symptoms and died. I had one hens that was sick. She has been isolated since I noticed she was sick. She has not gone back into the coop although she is doin well and even started to lay eggs. The sick hen had bubbles commin from her eyes. I gave her some antibiotics. I'm just not sure how it is the rooster got sick when none of the other hens are sick. The weather has been goin back and forth on hot and cold. I have a heat lamp and a bright light on them all the time. At night they are completely covered up. (we built our coop out of an old dog run. it has a complete roof and they have a nesting house as well as lots of roosting places.) Can anyone help me with my rooster? I jst can't loose another rooster again....

Are you sure you need a heat lamp, bright light and all covered up. Sounds like your coop needs some fresh air and ventilation. Perhaps too moist. Sinus infection? I would isolate and treat with antibiotics. Make sure plenty of liquid available.
