Hi I have a red sexlink hen that laid a very small egg today it was probably as small as a quarter maybe smaller.
It had very thick shell, was white , had yoke and looked fertile.
Basically it was a mini egg of the wrong color

What would cause this
I also have some black muskovy ducks laying it could be one of theirs I don't kno for sure

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! There are things that can change the shell color of a hens egg, but unless she lays more off color eggs, I would guess that your duck actually laid this particular egg, especially since it looked like a normal egg and not like a wind egg.

I don't know about ducks but, chickens usually start off with very small eggs, that gradually get larger as laying goes on. If it looked fertile, do you have a rooster?

Ya a silki rooster. They have been slacked off cus of the winter too it could be cus a hen just started it just looked strange lol the duck has been laying regular eggs tho so I don't kno if it was her or a chicken lol

Hi there,

and welcome to BYC!

Funky eggs happen. Especially when the bird is young, before she has her egg laying machine in gear. As long as any egg issue is very occasional, then it is nothing to worry about. Only if it become a regular thing, do you need to take action.

Enjoy your flock and it is great to have you aboard!

Welcome to BYC. The small egg is a glitch in the egg production cycle. They are referred to as 'fart' eggs.
