I have 6 RIRs they are just starting to lay. We have been getting three eggs a day. This morning i went to let them out and found a very soft egg. The other eggs we have been getting where find. I keep oyster shell out for them and they have layer feed to and we feed then table scraps when we have them. Am i doing something wrong .

If you only get a soft one once in a while then you are fine, probably just a rush delivery. If they continue to be soft then there is something missing in the diet.

My RIR is the only one who has laid soft-shelled eggs and continues to have a problem.

I have been all over this forum with this issue, in Breeds since it's only my RIR, and Feeding. Well I just found this very interesting study that everyone with this problem should see. It clearly finds that Red Lake Earth, this DE and Calcium mixture, helps thicken egg shells! Check it out. I'll post the link in Feeding also!

It is not unusual for a pullet just starting to lay to lay eggs that are soft, shell-less, small, large, uneven shells, misshapen, calcium deposits on shells, or otherwise unusual. They normally straighten out very quickly as their internal laying mechanism gets the kinks out. If this lasts more than two weeks, you may have another problem, but I expect it to clear up shortly.
