Very Strange Deformity (Graphic Photo)

I agree that culling looks like the most humane thing to do in this case. That chick must be experiencing discomfort, mobilitiy will be impossible for it and with poop and all the little bits in the brooder infection risk will be high. If you do manage to get the little foot out it will likely be malformed and the forementioned issues are still there.
It is such a hard decision to make when we have taken such care to bring them into the world safely. Hugs to you:hugs

Thanks for all of the kind words. My son is an intern and we are going to try to perform surgery on the chick tomorrow Not because I am too much of a wuss to dispatch it, but because we are curious, while at the same time wanting to give it a chance to live. We will use anesthetics and it will be humane. The opening around the leg is leaking dark tinged serum, not bright red which makes me think the leg is walled off from the vitals. I will let everyone know how it goes.

awwww the poor thing. I hope the surgery goes well but be prepared to do what is best for that little one.

Good luck for the poor little guy, let us all know how it goes. I am hoping that what you say is correct that it "walled off" from the vital organs and you may be able to make an open to pull it's leg out. Hoping for a full recovery

The other thing I'm worried about is if the leg does not have skin. I know the foot does but whether the leg does, it is hard to say. We are going to take x-rays and see where the rest of the leg is. I can at least see top of the femur.
