Very Strange Deformity (Graphic Photo)

Note: FYI--birds are supposedly quite vulnerable to problems under anesthesia. This chick certainly will need it for operation and I'm very glad you'll have some. But don't blame yourself if the chick doesn't make it.

I'll add my prayers, too.

Yes...I think it has to do with their sensitive respiratory systems. The blessing is that if you are able to help it will be a good thing and if not at least the little one will be under anesthetic if you have to decide to cull. Keep us updated on how things go.

I started reading the first posts and was thinking... An xray would be interesting.. And then found out you are going to try and save the little one. Good on you for at least trying.
I recently took a three day old duckling to the vet- for a leg deformity. He stayed in overnight as I had to be at work- they rang and asked to give him an anesthetic - And despite the risks- I did agree- They checked his leg out better while he was sleeping- But sadly he stopped breathing while coming around again. I really hope things go better for you and your little chick..It would be wonderful if you can help him to live a more normal life.

I would say that culling then autopsy would be the better way but as we all have to learn and your son is learning such things, there's nto much satisfaction in operating on a carcass - you'll never know if your 'patient' would have survived the op so you'll never know if you've used the right/best technique.

Whatever you choose, I think we'd all be interested in photos and commentary on the procedure and outcome. I'll be subscribing to this topic for sure.

Hi Paul! That's one of the most peculiar things I've seen --- appreciate you posting the pic.
I'm glad you have the facilities to there to xray and get an idea of what happened. Maybe it will be fix-able.
Good luck!
