Hi everyone, I have a sick hen! She was perfectly healthy this morning or so she apeared. After 5 hours or so she began sitting around with her wings hanging down, she can't keep her balance, she's having a hard time breathing! I brought her in, right now she is sitting down, she can't stand, she is breathing heavy, her beak is open and her eyes are closing! I'm so scared, I don't know what to do to help her. If anyone has any ideas of what she might have or what can I do to help her please answer as soon as possible!

might be sour crop.

go by plain yogurt and apple cider vinegar ( for horses)

feed chicken yogurt and make her drink the vinegar.mix yogurt into her feed.

also you can hang her upside down to drain her crop.its icky but it helps.

I'm so sorry.

How old is she? Did you check her vent area? Do you know when was the last time she layed?

First of all, whenever I have one that doesn't look well, I separate her from the others.
I check for any wounds first, then check around the vent area, to see if it is swollen, or there is any runny yellow poo - that could mean an egg broke inside.

I also check her breathing - if there is any wheezing it could be a respiratory disease - check also if she has a runny nose or swollen eyes - both also signs of respiratory diseases.

She is 3 years old. I have separated her from the others. She doesn't have any wounds. Her vent area is clean and unswollen. She laid an egg yesterday. Her breathing is very heavy, she keeps her beak open most of the time, but there isn't any wheezing. No runny nose, but har eyelids are a little swollen.

the white in the poop is the urates - if she has only whites, it may mean an impacted or sour crop, I'd probably follow gmendoza recomendations. Have you checked her crop? is it full?

I gave her apple vinegar and yogurt, she's the same except her beak is closed now! Her crop feels like a bag of water!

I would drain her crop.

Turn her upside down, massage her crop til all that white soupy stuff comes out. Then re-feed her yogurt and acv.

Update! I couldn't do the procedure gmendoza suggested..so I kept giving her the acv and yogurt. This morning she woke up feeling much better..she can sand up, she ate the yogurt on her own, she even tried to escape outside when she heard the other chickens so I have hopes she will survive and recover!

I wanted to thank you guys for all your help..I know that if you are raising chickens you should have a vet on speed dial..but sadly in our country (Romania) vets don't know much about birds..especially in our little town!
I'll continue to give her yogurt and acv in her water and I hope to come back with better news!
