As I was heading out this morning I noticed one of my Blue Swedes was limping quite significantly. She seems like she really does not want to put weight on one foot. Husband claims she was fine when she came our of the coop early this AM. I have found a vet that will see her tomorrow, but part of me wonders if the stress of me capturing, boxing and transporting her will do more harm than good. She is pretty skittish and normally does not let anyone get near her without running away. I have tried to have a look at her foot and don't see anything obvious, but again, she doesn't really let me get close. The other 3 quackers all seem fine.

She is about 8 months old. I have had a look at her feet, and she has what look like little calluses, but the do not look like the pictures of bumblefoot I have seen on the internet? Maybe it is in early stages. I added some probiotics to her water yesterday and today and she actually seems better this morning, still limping but not nearly as much. I am a little weary of trying to hold her down and do anything to her feet as she gets very stressed being held.

You could try covering her head with a towel while holding her. That might help her calm down. You will have to hold her to look at the foot or you'll have to pay the vet to do it. Either way she has to be thoroughly examined. I think if you aren't sure this is absolutely something a vet needs to look at it would be best for her to get examined by you and not have to go through traveling to the vet.

It would be best to clean it really well first. You'll want to look to see if there is any swelling, if there is anything stuck in her foot, and you'll want to feel the foot and leg for any cold or hot spots. If it's just a mild infection or a sprain you can treat that yourself. Epsom salt soaks will help in either case. The Epsom salt helps to draw things out of wounds, helps kill bacteria, and helps relieve inflammation. If you think she will get too stressed from having her foot soaked for a few minutes you could also try putting turmeric in her food. It helps to treat inflammation. Restricting her movement and forcing her to rest should help too.
