Viable treatment for Marek's Disease.

Thank you so much. I am seeing very positive feedback with the neurological form of Marek's.

If you don't mind my asking? How long between the initial dose and noticable return of mobility?

About a week and a half. Got the skullcap in on Sept 20 and her mobility showed improvement late last week or so.

That's awesome. I have another chick mom who had improvement within 5 days dosing 400mg twice dailey with a Silkie. He was fully recovered in 14 days.

Silkies tend to get hit the hardest. Maybe they need more. I attended a class in diseases of chickens recently. One of the things I learned is Bantams have a faster metabolism and per lb require more of some medications.

That's very encouraging. The pullet in question is actually a bantam x barnevelder. I don't know the moms breed, probably a barnyard mix. Solid black with a crest. I'll try increasing her dose and see if that helps her more.

I had an assessment done today by a Professional Avian Specialist. We are good. Two eye infections and a vitamin A deficiency in a broody hen. No sign of Marek's, no indication of ALV.

I cried.

Interesting info I fell across. Apparently, Biacalin also inhibits the ALV virus. It's news to me. I originally started out looking at JUST Marek's, but it's looking like Chinese Skullcap might be way more useful in the poultry industry as an overall suppresant for viral contagions.

The conspiracy theorist in me has gone rabid. A compound that suppresses viral infection would have an impact on the pharmaceutical industry by significantly reducing the need for antibiotics and steroids. Could be enough to warrant suppressing knowledge of said compound.

Not sure if I'd call this a hypothesis or a rabbit hole.. It is what it is.

Update.

While no sign of Marek's was found yesterday in my professional assessment, two eye infections were. A third began developing last night.

I have treated MG with the Chinese Skullcap tincture using the 425mg 2X daily dose. From what I'm seeing at the moment, I do not believe it is effective as a prophylactic for MG. I could see a breakthrough case, but 3? At the same time?

I'm looking into the circumstances as all three birds are special needs and stay in the same roost area, I recently changed bedding, two have issues eating, one had a recent eye injury, one recently joined the flock.

Hmmm. Like really recently. (30 days) Like hasn't been here long enough to build up in his system.... He's only ever had the prophylactic dose in his feed.

I may have messed up here. That new one is a Silkie Rooster.

Maybe new birds and special needs birds need boosters.

Hmmm. I'll update. I may have jumped the gun here, but still learned something.

Update. All 3 birds with eye infections cleared rather quickly with Denagard and Chinese Skullcap.

A forth bird developed an infection. She was NOT a special needs bird. She later developed Coryza and I had to pop that cheesey puss kernel out of her eye. She cleared in 3 days after.

The weather changed fairly drastically, a few runny noses. Upon advice gave a prophylactic dose of Denagard and Chinese Skullcap.They all cleared up in 36-48 hours. I did NOT use CS alone as stated in a previous post, I don't feel it is effective as a prophylactic for MG and this was just a runny nose. Without allowing the symptoms to advance and treat full blown MG, I have nothing but the studies and reviews and I'm not going to risk my babies for that.

Currently. No more deaths. I do have concerns about one girl who came to me by just showing up in my yard. I did have her examined and I know nothing about her other than she's sweet and lays Tiffany Blue eggs.The Avian specialist said she's no spring chicken. Apparently she's a senior citizen. She's stopping laying and kinda slowed down, but she seems fine. I'm still going to worry.

Hi, can someone speak to what part of skullcap is being used?

Some studies talk about the aerial parts of skullcap (used in the alcohol extract) and here I've seen people talking about the powdered root (in capsules or bulk).

Is there some agreement about which to use? Thanks.

The entire plant is acceptable. You're main interest is in the Baicalin content.

The powder I get off ebay has 14.8% Baicalin and it contains the entire plant.
