I've got four raised beds, (2) 6'x12 and (2) 6'x6'. Also some big containers, a berry patch and a small herb garden on my deck. Wish I had more, but them's the breaks. 
I rotate seasonally, and have the nightshades (and their companions) follow the legumes, which replenish some of the nitrogen for them. I add compost at planting time and then side-dress as more gets 'cooked'. There's a permanent section of one raised bed that has asparagus, strawberries, sorrel and a few herbs. Everything else moves.
I started gardening because buying herbs made me mad. Too much spoilage and too expensive. Also, my first year, my son (then 3) loved the color purple, so I got purple potatoes, carrots, cabbage, tomatoes and peppers. We had fun! He's 16 now, btw.
