Hello! My week old blue runner is (what looks like) breathing with her mouth. I have a headwasher for them, but she seems to avoid dipping too deep. She is acting normally, although she's always the first to lay down. What's the problem and what can I do for her?

Everyone is breathing fine now. It just took a little coaxing to get her to take to the water (and what I mean by coaxing is letting them have a splash in the kitchen sink). Funny how some ducks are more like fish, while others are little skeptical of the water.

Sorry for the false alarm! One day soon, I'm going to have enough experience to not worry about every little thing.

That's what I was afraid of... Haha!

What's even funnier is I was planning on keeping these ducks more as "livestock." I thought it would be a fair trade - giving them a good life in exchange for some eggs and meat. That would be it. But now, it seems they have become more like pets... somewhere along the livestock-pet spectrum, I suppose. Meat is definitely out of the question now (at least there will be no intentional premature deaths on my watch)

But it's a good learning experience. I'm trying not to bond so closely with our new batch, but who knows!

You have a lot of experience with ducks, Miss Lydia. Did your original expectations/intent pan out, or did it become something else entirely?

I met my first Muscovy actually in the mountain river below our home, there were 3 drakes I fell in love right off. so much so I went and bought 3 ducks to go with them, not knowing that is a no no But 10 yrs later I still have 1 of the drakes and the girls I got for him will be 10 this July. Lost one last fall. we talked about having some hatch for food along the way but once you see the personalities it's just too hard so nope we have never eaten one of ours or anyone else's for that matter. People look at me like i'm crazy when I say I have 14 ducks but that's okay

They just waddle right into our hearts don't they.

That's lovely! And pretty amazing that in the right conditions, ducks will live a long and happy life... 10 years, wow!

They certainly do waddle (or in my case, run in a ridiculously adorable fashion) right into our hearts.
