I have a silver laced wyandotte thats about 3 years old that has been doing this and i just could never figure out who it was. I finally caught her on video doing it. We do not have any roosters and never have had. I guess we do now. She does this EVERY morning about 6 to 8 times.

Anyone ever seen this ?
Anyone know why ?

Older hens in flocks with no rooster frequently take the place of a roo. They can grow spurs, hackle and saddle feathers can develop at the next molt and they start crowing! I have a 7 year old hen that this past molt has grown long hackle and saddle feathers and I've caught her a few times crowing like a cockeral with a hoarse voice. LOL She isn't crowing as well as your gal yet though.

Perfectly normal!!! :)

the first time we heard it we said " man, i wonder who has a rooster that close to us. Maybe its just the way the winds blowing thats causing us to hear one thats not close ". Oops, wrong !!

We had a rooster who liked to nest and sit on eggs! He also crowed, but he was gentle with the hens and very friendly. If you went into the coop, he would immediately race in and hop into a nesting box, get all the bedding squared away and settle down, egg or no egg there. Unfortunately our neighbor's bird dog killed him and everyone else last week. We would love another friendly rooster like that. I think he was the result of a light brahma Bantam and a Frizzle Bantam.

well, we have 5 girls that went broody all at once. do you think that has anything to do with that hen crowing ? maybe they think theres a rooster and they can have babies ?
