View Private Messages banner

When I logged on to BYC today there was a large banner in the upper R corner that had a small envelope and prominently said "View Private Message". I almost clicked on it, then noted below that my Private Messages area did not indicate a PM. If this is an advertisement, it is certainly misleading, and I would be very concerned about it leading to a nefarious site.



When I did go to my PM page, the banner changed to a centrally located envelope with "View Urgent Messages in the center of the top area

I know the ads you're talking about. They're all meaningless bait, and should be avoided.

BYC should switch to text ads that are obviously ads so it won't be so misleading and distracting, IMHO.

BYC doesn't put up meaningless bait.

Please do a scan of your computer to make sure no malware is present. In the meantime, thanks for letting us know and we will look into it. If you can get a screen shot, please PM it to either me or Nifty-Chicken.

I know you guys wouldn't do it, but the advertisers sure would. And banner ad space is a great place to bait people.

We get an advertising feed through Google AdSense and other ad networks. We don't / can't manually approve ads and are stuck mostly with what they give us.

We can ask for ads to be removed, so if you can take a screenshot of any offensive / misleading ads, we can try to get them removed.

I fugured it was an advertisement, just a very misleading one. No malware, spyware or others bugs detected here, although my laptop may have a limited future if it keeps acting up (it is 5 years old so maybe getting senile)
