Violet?

So I kind of skipped town on these forums for...a long time, just as the Sonja' s violeta mutation was starting up. I vaguely recall seeing a picture or two of young ones.

So my question is this - has that name settled down to violet or is there a new violet mutation? I have a friend who is buying peas, and a seller is attempting to sell him "violet" peas. The pictures the guy sent, to me from my way long ago knowledge, look a lot like a midnight blackshoulder color (haven't seen many pics of midnights either to be honest, and only 1 in person).

So, if anyone has sonja's violeta and/or violet pea photos I would love to have a look to see if this person is selling something real or is mistaken on terminology.

My understanding is that the Sonja has faded away and Violeta has morphed into a common Violet term. @AugeredIn , is the person on this list most in the know and could answer your question. Now that George is gone and others now breeding the violets, I don't see the Sonja as a lasting name. Time will tell. Perhaps the UPA will try to keep it alive.

That would make sense, I kind of figured that was probably the case. Sonja's violeta seemed like too long/strange a name to really stick.

In this case then, I hope someone has some photos for comparison. I'll see if my friend can send me the photos he got sent and see what people here think.

Okay Matt just sent the pics, so here is what the seller is saying is a violet (again, I don't remember what they are supposed to look like and feel like the last time I saw them they were a kind of reddish purple? But those might have been babies, or ladies. I've been searching for photos but they're being stubborn about being found):

Looks violet to me. That pic belongs to Milo Bardwell I believe and he has violets.

I knew I have seen that pic before. His stock came from Leggs. That is a much better pic than what Brad has listed on his web site.

I went to Brad's site but my phone just kept spitting out that the Violete BS pics didn't exist when i clicked the links

And the barred wing pics didn't look the same, so I found I couldn't judge anything on my own.

As long as I have you on the line, Ks, it has been a very long two weeks of my life. Do I remember you saying you would have some kind of opal kids this summer? and/or purple... bs... something... I can't remember and my brain is fried.

The color of these birds is very unique especially in bright sunshine. When I was at Brad Leggs it was cloudy and raining,,but when I was at Georges,it was very bright and sunny outside. Owning Midnights as well as India Blues the Violettas are a distinct shade of blue. As with all peafowl it only takes a minute change and instantly we have a new color to exploit thru higher prices. Cameo,Purple and Peach all comes to mind.
George told me the real story behind the Violettas when I was at his place. It is fascinating how keen his eyes were when he got these birds home and how he tried in earnest to hunt down the others that sold from a collective group but was not totally successful in getting those birds. But he realized what he had,kept them and started breeding them. He was not the "founder" of this color,,but he was the only person who knew the color of the ones he bought was very unique,,it's because of George the Sonja Violetta is what it is,,,he alone deserves the credit for isolating this color and breeding it true. I posted pics from George in possibly another thread that he sent me pictures to post,both of Violettas and midnights both outside in full sunlight,,BOTH VERY DISTINCT and easily recognizable when side by side.
The 4 hours I spent with George that hot,humid saturday afternoon were priceless.His insight into the issues with UPA,,,his insight into the future of home raised peafowl,,how easily he could recite genetics,,to how proud of the birds he was raising. Some things you cannot place a value on and that day I will never forget. I had often hoped while making a trip to my aunts house in Springfield Mo, that George would be available,,he called me twice the week before insuring me he would be home and wanted to have me out. Always remembered but never forgotten.

@frenchblackcopper Yeah, I did eventually find your thread on it this afternoon after I was finished with work and could get to a real computer. They look like they would be something really interesting in person. AugeredIn confirmed the birds belonged to the guy Matt named, too, so it would seem they are violetas. I don't know if he'll go for them at $600/ea but at least he'll have the info Thanks for your reply! You still doing opals by any chance
