it would just depend what you want in a bird... lots of eggs, personality, looks, etc. do you want tem now or are you willing to let them grow up? the best layers aen't always the best personality wise IMO. the best looking aren't always great layers. there's always some give and take... i love my bantam cochins (smallish eggs but great personality and very cute) but they tend to go broody,, so really aren't the best layers. the dorkings are very much the same. but i prefer looks and personality over laying capacity any dday. while some would prefer egg color and quantity to be a plus.

when i first got bacck into poultry after a number of years off, i tried a general assortment of mixed chicks. that let me experience what they were like individually and i went from there. sold off the ones i didn't like, refined what i wanted and went from there...

That is exactly what we plan to do! Try a variety and see what we like. I imagine with 7 hens, we'll have plenty of eggs every week, even if they aren't the best layers. Appearance isn't as necessary as personality.

So to brag my daughter (5) used astrolorp in a sentence and my 4 yo is busy memorizing chicken breeds!!

At the swaps (Gilmore) are there any plans to meet up with others from BYC? ANyone interested in doing this
I'd love to!! I'll be there wearing my BYC tee shirt.

Anyone know when the swaps start at the Christiansburg, TSC?
Well, the guy that usually sets them up is Charlie, but I don't have any contact info for him. I think charlie also started the roanoke one, but not sure. he's usually at both.

the christiansburg store hasn't been told when the next one will be, but she said once the weather starts warming up. i'd dare say the first saturday in april... that's when last years' was.

Roanoke's swap is always the 3rd saturdays. I just called there and was told it would probably be march if the weather cooperates...
I plan to head over anyways, if i have any birds to part with. right now i have mostly chicks hatching, and it would be a bit cold for them.

just a heads up... I have a friend that does name badges ($10 each last i heard) and can use any custom graphics (highest resolution possible)...

I'll be putting an order into him for myself, if anyone else wants one made let me know and you can paypal me $11 (for paypal fees and shipping) and you can pick them up from me either locally or at gilmanor, if you want.

this is what i'll be getting for myself most likely... (without the black border, that's just to show the shape of the badge...

mabelino, can I make a suggestion for a great chicken breed?? Euskal Oiloas aka Basque chickens, they are the most curious, friendly breed I have ever had. They are great layers and foragers.

Hey nikki, glad to see you here! Is one of those partridges Davy, if so I'd love to get him back. I wondered how many of that clutch would be cockerels. Of the two I kept one is a pullet who lays a tan egg and the other is definitely a cockerel. Silky chicks are so hard to tell when they are young. I've also got three 16 week old babies and I think two are Roos and one is a pullet based on size and attitude. I'd be willing to make some sort of trade with you.
