Virginia

Has anyone found a good source of organic non-GMO feed in VA?? I found one company that does non-GMO but the main ingredients in their feed is corn and soybeans.

I use feed from Big Spring Mill... no idea if any of the grains are gmo or not. all I can say is my birds do well on it, it's made locally, and I can afford it.

Hi all! I'm new to BYC, and new to Virginia... well, I haven't even moved yet. In June we'll be moving from MD to NW Virginia - Frederick County, outside of Winchester.

There are so many posts on this thread, and I can't read through them all! Can someone tell me if there is anyone else in my area?

Thanks!! So excited to be here!
Welcome to Virginia! I am not particularly near you...south on 29 almost to Charlottesville. but I met someone at the swap last weekend that was from that area, so I know there ARE people.

Good luck with the move...hope it goes smoothly!

i'm curious about the basque and legbars... are they blue egg layers too? pm me if you want. i've heard people talking but haven't looked into them much. i'm mostly interested in my 'unique' ee/blue egg layers, something to work into my 'weeble' line. LOL

Legbars have blue eggs but basques are a light brown.

Typing slow... brace on wrist.

I also understand Legbars are auto sexing at hatch. I want some as my 3rd breeding flock once I move and (hopefully) have more space for chickens.

well, I'm thinking my EE pen is going to get at least 1 crested sfh, so i can start on my weeble-ish calico ee's. 8) i like the calico coloration much more than barring.

THIRD?? um... you have Swedish Flower and... what? thought you sold all the cornish. (except the eggs that are hatching that is). mills and silkiebators don't count.

duh nevermind. forgot the reds. helps to read your sig.

it's a place for people to gather during a specific time to buy or sell (or both) poultry/chicks/eggs of all types, and any other type of smallish critter they have available. our swaps frequently include rabbits and goats too, around here.

Sounds like fun! I think we're going to try to go to the one in Sharpsburg, MD on June 8th.

well, here we go again! 8)

I have some more mille fleur cochins and blrw hatching, as well as a bunch of Bulldogma's dark Cornish and SFH...

going to test out a couple more broodies and see who really wants to be a momma.

the momma I had at gilmanor is still being an awesome momma, even tho she's inside in the brooder box still. I open the door to feed or fill water, she hops up on the edge and DEMANDS food NOW!!! won't even let me get the scoop in the brooder before she's trying to kick it all over the place. but she's a good girl so she gets a pass. still has 12 chicks growing well. 1 left over blrw, 2 weeble babies and 9 mille fleur cochins (some may even be her own!)

of the 4 other girls from her breeding pen, 3 are broody now, and all sharing a single nest and squabbling over the 1 egg that gets laid daily (and removed promptly). so they're the next guinea pigs for being real life mommas not just nest hogs.

Cream legbars are a UK breed that have only been in the USA 2-3 years. They were imported by Greenfire Farms. They do lay a medium-large blue to blue-green egg. I currently have 2 crested pullets I hatched and three roos that I purchased. The pullets are 4.5 weeks old and the roos are 3.5 weeks old. They are auto sexing with the females having distinctive chipmunk strips and the roos having a whitish pot on the top of their heads upon hatching. I also have 5 eggs in the bator due to hatch tonight into tomorrow. Here are some pics of my starting flock:

Roo #2

Roo #3 You can see some of the white spot on this one's head.

So even at 4 weeks old now, they still have their white spot. One roo is way ahead on development. His comb is enlarging and wattles are already growing with both comb and wattles pinking.

FYI - their is also a thread for cream legbars and a newly formed club, Cream Legbar Club that is working to develop an American standard,
