Virginia

Just a breeder/availability inquiry again. Anyone in southwest Virginia with any of the following pullets:

Naked Neck
Olive Egger
Marans
Welsummer

Just looking for egg basket variety; (dark brown eggs, speckled eggs, etc)

ok, for another dose of serious cuteness, here goes... thank god chickens can't count. LOL and to answer the question... before anyone asks... is 42. i think. for now? she's got: 2 mottled cochins about 3 weeks old 1 black & white EE same age (all 3 from gilmanor) 5 sfh hatched 5/11 8 mille fleur cochins (5/11) 2 weeble EE's (5/11) 10 dark Cornish or blrw (can't tell apart, 5/11) 7 more mille fleur cochins (5/16) 7 dorking/ee (5/16) i had today's hatch in a small bucket, sitting below the edge of the brooder while i readied the other brooder, momma's door was open (frequently stays that way). she hops up on the edge, looks down at the new babies, and immediately tried to get into the bucket to sit on them. i asked her if she was sure, she insisted she had plenty of room for them and whatever else i hatch out in the next few days. so in they went.
That's adorable. She's got her hands (or wings) full there.

They don't eat anything now. But they do damage hardwood shoots with their egglaying. I'm in southern Louisa Co. Over the past week I've been gathering between 100 - 150 in the mornings after I feed the pigs. Takes about 10 minutes. Distributing them between about 70 adult birds. takes about 3 minutes, lol.
Well, they're officially here in Barboursville. Went outside to tend to the chickens and came back in and sat down. Heard this little buzzing noise and there were two clinging to my sleeve, their beady little read eyes staring at me. lol.

ok well it's official. I have a 'baby crazy' broody. she just took 4 more from the hatcher. to see what happens I didn't try hiding them under first. just set them down in front of her. she reached out and gently pulled them to her, tucking all 4 underneath and displacing probably 6 more in the process. LOL so she's up to 46... I wonder if there's a record for bantam broodies.

Good golly! You should call one of the news stations. They'd probably do the story just to have a cute, fun piece to show!

i watched my asil hen jump off the house , grab a cicadia in mid air, and when she hit the ground with bug in mouth, both of her chicks started eating it. awesome.

well, i'm headed to the Roanoke swap soon as hubby helps me load up the brooder... momma and her multitudes are going for a ride this morning, in the hopes to ease the overheating problems she seems to be having. LOL

they pile on under and around her, then she sits there panting...

lol ... for her sake, I hope the load gets reduced. Heading off to the Orange County Swap today myself to reduce the chick overload.

Quote: well, it's down by 10... turnout at the swap was light today. lots of sellers, no buyers. but then it was also threatening rain most of the morning...

I may try to find another broody to foist off some of the chicks onto... at least to be able to sort breeds more easily.

fortunately it's only 67 outside right now. the brooder is still wrapped in a tarp with momma and chicks, waiting for hubby to get home and help me bring it in... too heavy to solo with 237 pounds of momma and chicks in it. LOL

ok so i'm estimating their adult weight, not current...
