well I've had a busy afternoon...

just got done doctoring my older red dorking roo... had a case of bumble foot come on FAST. he lost the spur and a toenail (on the 5th toe) on the other foot, and I'd noticed him limping, figured it was related. then yesterday he was hiding in the bushes away from the other red roo, so I knew something was up, but couldn't get to him so figured I'd see what's up today. well, this morning he's hiding by the door under our deck (daylight basement) and sogged from the rain. ok good a time as any. and his foot was HUGE! not the one that was damaged, but the other one... tho he's red and swollen on both, but I can't find any signs of bumble foot on the one with the toenail missing, so maybe just from gimping on it more than the bumbled foot...

I fixed up a bucket of hot water and Epsom salts, found a foil pan and cut a hole in it for both legs (folded the edges so they weren't sharp) and put him in... he laid there on top of the pan for probably 10 minutes the first time, making no effort to move (in the utility sink). worked on the plug some, soaked some more, worked on it again and got the top layer off, soaked some more, then pulled the plug and got all the gunk out (ick, ick, and more ick). soaking some in-between treatments. after I got as much as I could out, I filled it with Neosporin best I could, put a pad over it and used some (defective) vet wrap to hold it all together... self-adhesive my butt... it wouldn't stick to itself for anything. LOL so I used some tape too. duct to be specific. LOL it won't fall off now.

so now he's pigging out on sweet feed (his favorite) in a small dog crate and looking MUCH happier now. if something is going on with the other foot, I can't find it (other than a broken off toenail and spur). so we'll see how it goes and what happens... he'll get shot for the next few days with some penn G too, to combat anything that might go systemic.

but even just half hour later, he's looking a LOT more alert and happier... before he was just laying in the cage looking half dead.

I have a hen just come down with this, too. and one of my Roos is limping...I will inspect him tomorrow morning (catch him when I open the coop) wonder why all of a sudden...

I think it's got something to do with all the wet we've been having... a small puncture on the foot, then it didn't have a chance to dry out and heal but instead became infected and abscessed...

That's what I was thinking, too. it's nice not to have to water the garden, but wreaking havoc on the animals. the midge population has exploded here...regret it immediately when I go out without bug spray. and everywhere that I've thrown down scratch has mold growing on the ground!!!

Roanoke, VA!

Hi, another Hokie! I'm a nOOb here in Dublin, no chickens yet but pheasants and quail.

If anyone wants some bobwhites I've got a mess 3 weeks old. I figure I'll bring some to the sept. Swap in Christiansburg but if anyone wants any younger ones just let me know.

unfortunately I've got 2 swaps on the same day I want to go to! the Christiansburg poultry swap, and the Roanoke Hamfest. (ham radio stuff). thinking spending time with hubby and friends is going to win out next weekend... and I won't be at the Roanoke swap in September because I'll be at Gilmanor (glen Allen VA). so if anyone wants any easter eggers let me know. I've still got a bunch.
