Quote: The law may be driven by insurance co's, for just the reasons you stated earlier, about the over-abundant deer population. Most insurance co's think deer hunting with hand grenades should be legal..; 0) Anyway, they have a very powerful lobby.

LOL I think hunting deer with hand grenatdes might be fun, but it would ruin the meat. LOL

might want to save those hand grenades and heavy artillery for when the 'collapse' occurs. lol. oh well , guess I can go rabbit hunting after church on sundays, now. or can you use beagles on sunday?

Jimmy I believe its no K9s for chase on Sun but you can use it to track wounded from what I understand. I guess bird dogs are OK . IMHO

I live in Carrollton Va and just bought 6 pullets from TSC today. Have them inside in a big tub with a heat lamp and wood shaving.
Have been wanting chickens for a while and finally gave in today and took the plunge.
I was told to keep them inside for 6 weeks and keep the temp in the tub at at 85 degrees?
Does this sound like good advise?
I have the coop out side complete and ready to move in.
Eventually they will be allowed to free range the yard in the evenings when we are out there to supervise them.
Another question i have is - do i need a nesting box for each chicken?
I originally wanted only 4 chicken and was told i have to buy 6 of them. Anyone close by want two baby chicks?

Thanks for your help.

I wouldn't give away any until they're a bit older, personally. they learn social structure from each other, plus accidents happen, so better safe than sorry...

as for temps etc. I keep my day olds in a room that's usually around 70 +/- with a 75 watt heat emitter about 8" over the bedding. they move toward and away as they get hot/cold. eventually they stay away more than close, so then I just turn it off. about 3-4 weeks old. my oldest inside group went outside, without heat, 2 days ago. they range from 3-4 weeks old and huddle for warmth overnight. last night got down to about 45, I went to check on them and they were quiet and sound asleep. no complaining.

some people brood outside with a heated shelter so the chicks can come and go as they wish. when I've done that I've noticed they seem to spend a lot more time outside during the day and only in the heated area at night...
