Virginia

I had some eggs in an incubator that spiked in temp.  None of the eggs loked like they were still Alive.  Easter hatch day came and went and I gave up.

Last night I wend down to get rid of the eggs and turn the thing off and there was one little lonely chick in there.  I stopped looking days ago, but she looks okay.  I put her in with some others that were a bit older.  I hope she didn't get dehydrated or something.  Today is my birthday and my wish is that she lives. She is a reminder to not give up.

If she is still okay tonight, I think I will name her "Hope".

Happy Birthday! I hope Hope does great!!

well, she's still with us and seems to be doing great. she's actually bigger than the two chicks I put her with. One was born with most of it's intestines hanging out. I eventually tied them off with dental floss and snipped them and crossed my fingers but she's fine. the other one has spraddle leg.

This was not a good hatching season for me. I think I need a new thermometer. there has to be a reason why I am getting nothing to hatch. but this little one looks perfect!

intestines? or loops of the empty veins from inside the shell? 2 different things and 2 drastically different results... intestines won't heal right and you'll end up with a septic bird who can't poop. the empty veins, I've had that before, often wrapped around a foot or leg. those heal up just fine once they're snipped (not tied, just snipped and a dab of iodine on them and the umbilical area, if it's still open.

Got my chicks on Thursday, only lost one welsummer, which, of the three, is probably my roo. I figured I would get a few packing peanuts in the mix, since my order was only 10 chicks total. I ended up with 9 extra males. 9. Anyone need a suspected leghorn cockerel or 9? I guess I might have to build a bachelor pad…
