Could use some chick advise please.

I have a hen that went broody, so I gave her 8 eggs to see what she would do. She has NOT been a great broody-mama and has left them several times for extended amounts of time. I did NOT expect any to hatch and thought that IF any did they would likely be late.
Well, yesterday was the 'due' date and low and behold 2 hatched!!!!! She had killed one before I found them and was upset and messing with the one that had piped. I got my brooder set up as quickly as I could (who needs a brooder - I've got a broody.... yeah right....) and by the time I got back to them the chick was taking a break so she had settled down. I sat out in the coop till about 11:00 with it hatching in my hand - which was VERY COOL!!!!!!!

So here's the questions:
1. Once it was out of the egg, it was still attached at it's butt by a vein and what looked like some white membrane. I let it be and left 'her' to dry off and rest. This morning 'she' was dragging the shell around behind her so I broke off the crusty membrane right at her butt. Should I be concerned????? Is that normal?????
2. I noticed this morning that there are TINY black specks crawling on the thermometer that is laying in the shavings. Like I said, my brooder was NOT ready for chicks. I had JUST swept it out this past weekend to prepare for Gilmanor chicks. I was planning to dust it this week in case there were any 'critters' in there from the roos that were in there a few months ago. IF these are mites - what can I do for a day old chick????? Or - reguardless of what they are, what should I do about them (if anything)?

I would say move chick to a plastic tote with light suspended above it and clean bedding... the brooder, you can dump out the bedding, dust it with sevin dust (get it in all the cracks and crannies) and then put new shavings in (I don't worry about getting all the sevin back out but dump any loose dust) then put the baby back... the sevin should take care of any creepy crawlies.

I HAVE also used a drop of ivermectin (pour on) on young chicks with varying results... but not sure if the losses were from mite overload before it was noticed (shipped chicks at that!)

I have to admit that I was a little surprised to see 'her' alive and alert by the time I got home. Brooder cleaned (thanks Karen) and re-set-up. Chick starting to pick at feeder & waterer and pooing. Yea!

Oh Karen! This little 'girl's' daddy is the Weeble baby I got from you last year - my Benzo. And 'her' mom could be either a SLW, the BLRW that I got from you or Speckled Sussex.

Not sure if it's ok to post here...moderator, feel free to delete if I'm not supposed to.

Located in northwestern Goochland County, near Hadensville. Chicks just hatched Saturday. Easter Egger roo over Barred Rock hens. Straight run, $4.00 each, any pullets should lay blue or green eggs from what I've been told. I do not believe they are sexable as chicks because my roo does not carry the correct gene to create sexlink chicks, and I have no idea how to sex them otherwise. There are 15-20 chicks available. Sorry about the fuzzy picture, my camera's flash is broken so I had to use a flashlight to light the babies up.

actually that's how you DO a sexlink... barred hen with non-barred roo, the chicks with white spots on the head are roosters, the pullets won't have that.

I was told that originally, but when they started popping out of the eggs, some were not black. Some are yellow, some look like chipmunks. One is yellow with a couple of black spots on its back. If they are sexlink, how did I end up with those oddballs? LOL

It's hard to see the barring indicator dot on the yellow downed chicks. I just have to wait and see with my Basques, which are a barred red chicken.

If the parents were mixes to begin with you can get some crazy stuff! They will still cluck, lay eggs and taste like chicken...

Good to hear, lol, cause mine are a mixed up bunch too. I bought a few purebred eggs but most are from my girls. EE roo over RIR, red sexlink, blue rock, white leghorn(well she was suppose to be but think she's California white), jersey giants, barred rock and EE hens.

Neat, when I get my chicks this May (May the 28th) and after they grow up I'm going to experiment with crossbreeds. I'm going to experiment with Buff Orpingtons, Buff Brahmas, EE's, Black Australorps, Barred Rocks, New Hampshires, Polish, SLW etc......
