Virginia

Tony, you're a state tester too, right?

is there anything that says we can't test birds AT the swap for people? so they can maintain their npip status?

if that's a possibility, I will be bringing my gear to test birds for people ($5 per bird).

which one is that?

I know chrisitansburg tsc is having issues because the landlord considers it a flea market and won't allow that on their property. tsc wants us there, we bring them business.

Any news on this? Shelors such nice folk, say anything bad they sue ya! I heard the swap might not even be happening this weekend (but from a less than reliable source, the Christiansburg TCS put his free location but $10 per vendor to his wallet swap in pulaski out of business)

Karen,

Certainly, an NPIP testing station could be set up and you are on your own recognizance in terms of how much you charge per bird. I would want to get permission from the folks running the Gilmanor Swap to do this but I cannot imagine that there would be any objection. Just remember that you cannot test birds under four months of age. Although unlikely given the health of the poultry population in Virginia regarding pullorum/typhoid, the challenge would be dealing with a confirmed positive test. If we found a positive, we would have to do some back tracking to identify the source of the bird, gather information, and report the findings to the State.

Hi all - I am coming from Fairfax County, just near Loudon County, and this will be my first time going to the Gilmanor swap. How does one create such a shopping list? Is there a place where folks post what they're bringing? Or is it just what you hope to find?

Thanks all,
Maria

Maria,

You should have an idea of what you are interested in and looking for. Barring that, you will an unbelievable number of vendors/folks who are selling all varieties of poultry and other farm and non-farm animals. As far as what you will find at Gilmanor, some folks will post on forums like BYC or on Facebook. But for the most part, you will just have to look around to see what is there and what you might want to acquire.

Have fun! it really is the largest swap I have ever been to.

Oh, and I know that there is a thread on Gilmanor over in the Chickenswaps area, but this is more lively, so forgive me if I shouldn't be posting here.

Is there food at this swap? If it is as large as I hear, my crew is going to need some sustenance. Anything substantial to eat, like ribs and cornbread or - dare I say it - chicken? Is there room to picnic?

Maria

Thanks, Tony! I am sooo looking forward to this. It sound like it will be a blast! Again, forgive my ignorance, but there's no order the vendors are set up in, right? Like, all the chicken vendors in section A, goat folks in B, and so on. It strikes me that is probably not how these things work. Barring that, is there just a map of the facilities - a general here's parking, here's the port-a-potty area, etc. I keep seeing this swap announced all over, but I can't find a website devoted to it or anything, so I'm asking here. Just want to be prepared is all - I'll have four kids in tow.

Thanks!
Maria
