Virginia

don't know that tough is quite the word I'd use... but if something doesn't happen soon, it could mean losing more than my birds.
Losing a job is always the pits- been there and done that several times in my life and every time it turned out for the better so keep the chin up .
By your posts I would say you are a get it done type person so someone out there needs someone like you.
Tell us what type work you do and maybe a fellow Virginia poster knows an employer in your local thats looking for people .
Best of luck and wishes in where ever this change takes you.

Oh, no...so sorry about the job!!! when I was unemployed a few years ago I discovered "indeed.com" it tries to take all the jobs out there and put them in one place so it's easier to find everything available. good luck. what is your field? I will keep my ears open, although the commute would be tough. do you have a significant other that you have to stay put for because his job is there?

I wish you lived closer...I'd love to get some dorking eggs from you. I have had such crappy hatching this year. I think I need to callibrate my thermometer. but got tons of broodies now, unfortunately they are all my dorkings...so not laying eggs!!!
yes, married with 4 horses plus the chickens and other fur and feather kids, not to mention 26 acres and a mortgage. LOL so I'm limited to the Roanoke/Christiansburg/Blacksburg area... or working from home, which is what I was doing previously.

fwiw, I like working with computers, learn programs easily. like to design stuff but don't know that it's 'job' caliber. (websites, forms, etc). I love building stuff too, (wood working, and again there's the design thing) but again don't think it's 'work-worthy' just things I tinker with. BS in animal sciences concentrated in genetics and reproduction, not a lot of good that does me either...

also farrier at one time, but back injury prevents that full time now (takes me a day or 2 to do each of my own horses). I can type, (fast when I set my mind to it), worked for a call center for the last 10 years taking orders, customer service, etc.

I'm also a state pullorum tester now too, if there were much demand for that... and I obviously like working with animals (and I dare say, I'm good at it). but again physical limitations due to years of abuse by horses (landing on head, butt, back, you name it while training horses).

I've managed pet stores (know all about fish, birds, small animals and supplies), barn manager (aka chief manure shoveler both times LOL)

I'm an excellent egg hatcher too. again good with genetics (especially poultry).

add that all together and you get... not much of anything I can make money at...

Don't stress over the job loss. I lost my job (it must be 3 years ago) and it completely changed my life, in a good way. It made me realize that no pile of money is ever going to make you happy. Family, friends, and chickens will keep you happy. The bills will get paid one way or another. You want to just stop the money bleed right away. Here is what I did:

1. Cancelled my cell phone and switched to prepaid (the kind you buy the card at Walmart or Target) such as StraightTalk, Tracfone, etc. That way if you short money, you just don't use the cell phone that month.
2. Switched my cable to a cheaper plan (actually went from one provider to another).
3. Turned of all those little auto-bill pays like video games, Netflix, etc.
4. Shopped for and got cheaper insurance, even from the same company.
5. Contacted my mortgage company immediately. Some of them like Chase will allow you to take 6 months of no-payments. They just add it to the end of the loan. But you need to do this BEFORE you are going to be late. If you are already late, they may not help.
6. Started clipping coupons. You would be amazed at how many items you can get for under a dollar with double coupons.
7. Applied for unemployment. Even if you don't want it, you paid for it. Plus it will make you qualify to get any medicines you take for free. The drug companies want to help and unemployment insurance qualification is usually enough for them.

And last but not least, take time to relax while you can. Most likely another job will present itself quickly. Use the free time to write that novel you always wanted, or catch up with the family.

I develop apps for mobile phones, iPads, etc. Instead of going to work for yet another corporation (which I cannot stand to do anymore), I found I can work for myself and make enough money. So if technology is your thing, take the time to learn app development. You will have more work then you want. :)

1, had only a tracfone for better than 10 years...
2. don't own a television.
3. don't own a tv... LOL facebook has my games.
4. nobody can beat the deal I've got with geico. been with them over 15 years now.
5. mortgage is owned by hubby's uncle... hubby isn't willing to skip payments.
6. been there done that, normal state of being.
7. did that yesterday.

as for mobile app development, I haven't got a clue about most apps, since all I have is a tracfone. LOL

and yes, once I'm caught up, (once unemployment kicks in) then i'll have the liberty of doing some stuff around the house that needs doing... like... finishing the house! (been under construction 15 years now and I still don't have a kitchen). at least that's the plan. hubby has admitted I do pretty good woodworking, so I just need to get the livingroom/kitchen cleared out (15 years of 'stuff' accumulated and stored...) and start laying floor (4" red oak). then once that's done, finished, sanded, (and ceiling and walls sanded/finished) then the kitchen can go together and we can finish the bedroom at leisure.

I can guarantee it won't be super fast, but it'll be right.

Martha, the game hen's surrogate brood is now almost as large as she is, at 6 1/2 weeks! Ten more days and we should have another batch of BA's to bring along...

Have Chick-Can Travel!
Martha looks on with disdain, while I preen over my chicken tractor project... This is pretty much straight out of Harvey Ussery's small flock poultry book. My chicken bible.. Still a little trim work, but the game birds I got from Cubalaya, at Gilmanor, seem to be happy here. It should overnight about fifty birds. The hatch at the back gives access to the egg nest, without stooping in from the front.
