hello Virginians! ... i'll most likely be moving to VA within the year... i've got peafowl and was hoping someone would be able to give me info or a link letting me know where the peafowl would be legal... any help is greatly appreciated... thanks, john
I don't know - are the restrictions usually the same for those Fancy Pheasants as they are chickens .
I believe there is a thread on BYC for that but I would just call around or check websites for the towns/county you are planning on going to.

It seems most of the rural counties that don't border the major metro areas are not very restrictive - if they are Agri/timber areas.
Some of the towns within do but if you stay rural they are less restrictive. IMHO

For my area, Augusta County, chickens are allowed, I don't think there is a restriction unless maybe you open a large business. But there are "eggs for sale" signs all over. The city of Staunton allows NO farm animals. The city of Waynesboro does allow chickens....not sure how many.

checking with ag dept of state is best idea. Just a matter of 15 miles makes a difference in my area where I can and cant raise what I want. That is why I am where I am. The only person hurt by this is my sister bc she can not ride her mobile (handicapped) scooter from the scooter store for coffee at my place in the mornings.

I've got a problem. My new cockerel (six months) has taken issue with one of my older hens. Starting a couple weeks ago, I've caught him, srveral times, chasing her down, then holding her down, while he bites at her head. Shes dang near bald, now. All I can think of is one of them has to go... Any ideas/expe rience? Thanks!

VDACS won't be able to tell you much since it a county and city issue that they don't stick their nose into.

As others have said most cities (which in VA are NOT a part of the county they are in) have ordinances that run the whole gamut from nothing allowed up to a handful of hens and one rooster. Most counties that I know of in my area have nothing on the books that they enforce but it is also rural. The more urban counties like around Richmond or Northern VA have ordinances that in some cases are just as bad as the city ordinances.

Hahaha how funny *is sarcastic* Just kidding!

About restrictions I'm pretty sure most counties around me (Floyd, Carroll, Montgomery, Pulaski, Patrick) don't have many restrictions, if they do a lot of people don't follow them because these are all more farming counties. I don't know about the towns, I'm sure they have a few restrictions, but still don't know exactly
