I would have went ahead and built one large, long barn with multiple stalls from the beginning instead of multiple 5'x10' runs with 4' square or so houses as I got more chickens! I always knew that my master plan is a self-reliant farm. I just planned to be adding a new element every so often as we got in tune with each element. Yep, one big barn- poultry stalls set up on one side, stalls set up for Nigerian Dwarf goats, guard dogs, piglets/hogs in Fall/Winter and a nice feed and storage room on the other side. I've planned this thing out for years but you use what you got to get things going:) Folks' advice of build bigger at the beginning? Totally correct!

Chicken Math
I never intended to have this many. I got one hutch and pen and several darlings hatched, then came the first Chainlink Doggie Kennel. Then I added another hutch and pen. Then another crew of Chickens, and another, and another.... Then they were in our barn, in my sons metal shed, the walkin pen and coup and then more, I have a problem with parting. I have had chickens before but bc where we lived and we were still moving about. Now I have returned to my home state to retire several years ago. There is no neighborhood limit. And a big problem,. I clinged too long to the perfect chicks. Must be because I did not get enough loving in my childhood. LoL
Now I am in the process of downsizing to just the 20x41 building of 8 runs for me. They go and free range and I plan to have only one roo for every 1-4 gals. Except for those Bresse. Lots of those that is why they are in the end.
Our barn will be given to our son. It has 4 stalls on one side, one large stall system on the other side with a large storage closet. And a very large space down the middle where my hubby has been keeping his tractor. His plans are to build another barn for his tractor and cars. Even though Our son will down size his Poultry as well for the adding of one billy and two nanny goats.
Our Master Plan has changed.
We had a plan and I blew it adding many more beautiful Chickens than planned. Now, I have redone my Master Plan.
A much larger building than the first Master Plan, Less Chickens than now but more than my first intentions. If they do not fit under Ft Chix roof, or his barnyard animal roof, they go. See you at the Flock Swaps this Spring.

From Lynchburg, VA area. Just started with Dark Cornish chickens and I'm learning a lot. Anyone else from this area?

I am in Lynchburg.
Cornish. Very cool!
I have a hodge podge. I am thinking I'll breed Australorps (I have some lavenders), and some day, Dorkings.

Flock swaps are an easy way to meet chicken peopleand buy/sell/trade whatever you have or want. As a side note I'd add be open and honest, don't expect gold prices and a good trade is always abetter ice breaker than a good sale if you're the newby in town:)

I have 40 atm. Just put some pictures up from my phone I have to get a few. I have only had them about 5 months and I am still working on building a chicken run which is basically done. That's awesome you like chickens. I am getting more into self sufficiency.

I am not in Lynchburg. I think it is cool that you plan to breed Australorps. I have 3 black hens. We have 1 black roo. I have never seen a Lavender. That is freaking awesome! I am kinda new to this. We were considering dorkings, but have yet to seek them out or order. Either way best wishes.
