Does anyone have any insight into the state chick minimum law? I'd love to sell baby chicks but most people only seem to want 2-3 but the law seems pretty cut and dry to me:

§ 3.2-6510: No person shall sell, raffle, give away, or offer for sale as pets or novelties, or offer or give as a prize, premium, or advertising device any living chicks, ducklings, or other fowl under two months old in quantities of less than six...A violation of this section is a Class 3 misdemeanor.

However, I see TONS of ads on craigslist including some of the bigger Richmond area farms stating either no minimum or 3 chick minimums. Any thoughts?

I'm no lawyer (thank goodness) the first question that comes to mind is - how the heck do they enforce that? And what I'd like to see, is what is the protection offered to the citizens of the commonwealth with that law? I think I'll stick to selling / giving away eggs. Seems easier and more compliant.

I would imagine for enforcement all it would take is a bored Animal Control or other LEO to just show up. The fact that it simply includes "offer for sale" makes every craigslist post a target and the Class 3 misdemeanor is a $500 fine that I don't really want to test my luck with.

Like you, I've been sticking to selling eggs and hatching chicks for my own flock (as well as my in-laws).

Not sure on HOW the wording of ad should read..but there's "trio's" for sale all over our area..far as enforcement,, I imagine it's like those out dated "laws" where you can only car wash on tues&thurs(or that your mule may only plow in certain seasons) nobody's gonna take the time to enforce let alone prosect as long as no one's complaining. Again I am NOT saying anyone should break the law EVER.

If someone monitors CL or online ads it should be for all the child predators not chicken amount violaters.
Can you "barter" instead? Like eggs for chicks or a gift card verses check/cash? Then your trading NOT selling.

I honestly don't know enough about it to even speculate how old or new the law is - I first noticed it when I saw people complaining about TSC minimums and also in an article about Richmond City backyard ordinance restricting you to 4 hens when the minimum for chicks was 6, forcing people to just buy near to lay pullets.

I really just like hatching (and by hatching I mean letting the broodies do it) but unfortunately too much of that would create the need to sell. I had 40 birds at one point last year before selling (and eating) some of the extra cockerels and taking my in-laws 6 hens to get them started with a flock - all hatched by my 6 girls. Chicken math

WOW your running quite an operation! That's a lot of chickens,no matter what type of math your using!
