Virginia

Yes, I now see how silly that looks. I am new to chicken keeping and this web site. I apologize to any of those that may have been offended by my post and question. Can it be deleted? Yikes!
I am getting my stew pots out now!!!
Thank you to all for being kind!
Don't feel silly, we've all been there! You can get it deleted, but it's something for the mods to deal with, so just don't feel bad and eat that mean guy!

I'm joining in on the Virginia thread. We're in the process of purchasing 13 acres outside of Roanoke. I have six barnyard mixes and I am eagerly looking forward to many, many more chickens. I even have managed to get big chicken coops and runs at the top of the to do list for our new property. There's so much to plan, it's so exciting and overwhelming!

Thanks. I've lived in Roanoke for 18 years now, with a two year intermission in California. This is just my first venture into having land and a farm. I am not 100% certain what you mean by Fakebook animal sites, but I can probably guess.

Right now we live very close to the Roanoke TSC, but I've never been happy with their stock. Our move will put us halfway between that store and the one in Rocky Mount. It means they are both a 30 minute drive, but what one store lacks the other might have. There's a poultry swap at the Roanoke store on the 16th. I've been debating whether or not to go. I'd like to keep a closed flock, so I'm looking for hatching eggs. I'm weighing the pros and cons of finding someone local and accepting whatever they have versus ordering shipped eggs to get what I'd like and risking damage to them. We have a road trip planned to a nursery in Afton on the 16th anyway, I may stop by the swap on my way out of town just to see what is there. Right now I'm ready to pull the trigger on shipping eggs, but I keep changing my mind. I wish closing would get here already! I don't need all this extra time to dilly dally with; I want to get started!

I find most are impatient and want everything now, instant everything. Most don't seem willing to wait and not willing to work towards a goal.

I would like to recommend, Looking at the forum on breeds. Look on the internet for different breeds. Believe me the top ten are not spectacular nor are they to be compared with yesterdays.

How many eggs do you need a day? How many people under one roof? Do you need meat birds.donyou need Layers? Dual purpose chickens of today are not the dual purpose chickens of my Grandmother's time. Trust me on that you would be amazed at when my grandmother was born. Do you want big pretty friendly fluffy sweethearts or standard sized mean rattlesnake of a chicken you run from?

So many things to go over before you make mistakes and shoot your wad on chickens no one else wants so your stuck with it.

What are your needs?
What type of housing do you have or how much are you willing to invest in housing? Do you realize chickens eat constantly? Do you have a safe area for chickens to free range? Just because you don't see predators does not mean they are not there.

What is available locally? How far are you willing to drive? Do you own an incubator and Hatcher? I do they cost me $2,000. Are you willing to accept responsibility for eggs. Have you ever seen a box of $150. In eggs go through the mail bought off of eBay? A box of books from Amazon comes pristine from The Dakotas. Will send you a pic of mine and believe me, you assume all costs and there are no guarantees. Do you know how to properly identify a fertile egg versus a non fertile egg? Ok when it hatches where are you going to put it? PersonallyI have on order a new battery that is setting me back $1,400.
I could go on but would rather hear from you to see what your interested in?
