Virginia

That really stinks about your flock, but at least you had a survivor. I'm sure everybody has a favorite for different reasons, but we use to have Golden Comets bc we mainly were after the fresh eggs, and man did those hens lay. We had 10 and were getting dozens of eggs every week. We just recently got 6 Black Australorps and 1 Lavender Orpington (my wife's chick) and also building a new coop and run.... actually finished the coop and working on the run now. Welcome to BYC and good luck with everything.

I'm sorry about your flock. I keep bantam cochins. They are absolutely the sweetest!

Hi, I moved to Virginia last year (near Culpepper) and we recently lost almost our entire flock (we think it was a fox) except for a lone survivor.

Her name is Fuzz, and she is kinda living in the house at the moment.
We plan on getting new chicks to start again and building them a new coop and run so we can predator-proof from the ground up and have them a little closer to the house.
I was wondering what everyone's favorite breeds are?
My mom wants chickens that are good layers, and she ends up buying whatever is available at Tractor Supply (Rhode Island Red, Sex-Links, Plymouth Rocks). While I just want a few little cochin bantams. I bought one from a feed store in PA when we lived there and she was the sweetest little hen.
SO sorry to hear about the losses. :hugs

I love the heritage breeds.
Smart, capable, good layers, good moms, hardy, and dependable. At one point or another I've had nearly all the heritage breeds, plus sex linked layers and more modern blue egg layers too. I love them all, but hands down, it's the heritage breeds.

Hi everyone, glad to see alot of Virginians here. I am in Fluvanna county and I have Jersey giants and austrolp. We just got 6 ducklings also, not sure what breeds yet.
:welcome Always glad to see another Virginian here! Those Jersey Giants must be fun:) Haven't gotten into ducks, but the ducklings are so cute. I just love watching them. Post some pics, we love pics!
